Intel’s Zero Voltage Processor…Wait, What?

That’s right. Intel has just patented a Processor which will run on virtually zero voltage.

With each passing day, new processors with ever increasing number of cores and operational frequency are getting developed. And this is what we all want – a fast processor.

However, there’s a catch. Adding more cores and increasing the frequency of a processor is of no use if its power requirements and heat dissipation problems are not addressed.

I know you don’t want a super-fast processor that slurps your battery juice in 3 hours and changes climate of your pocket. And make it like as if you are in the Miami Beach.

And Intel has found an innovative way to address this issue by introducing a Deep State Mode in their processors. The processor becomes almost inactive as long as it runs in the deep state mode. And while you use your smartphone, it works normal.

The power manager whenever find zero pending tasks, puts the processor in a sleep state. And while doing so, it tranfers the state information to a cache memory.

In other words, the power management scheme allows the processor to save its state, turn off the power and then wake up when necessary. It also restores the critical state, and continues from where it left off.

And on top of everything, it does so without explicit support from the operating system and further accomplishes it with an extremely short latency period (about 100 microseconds).

I’m expecting this to be featuring soon in the upcoming mobile phones/laptops. This is going to provide an appreciable Battery Life which may make you leave you power banks home.
