Fitbit made it clear last year that significant changes were underway as Google aimed to integrate the Fitbit brand into its own. The company announced the discontinuation of Fitbit account support and its replacement with Google accounts. The initial step towards this transition is set to commence next week.

Google officially acquired wearable company Fitbit for a whopping $2.1 billion in 2019.

According to Droid Life, starting from June 6, users will have the option to sign into Fitbit using their Google accounts. While Fitbit had previously mentioned the switch would happen in 2023 without specifying a date, it has now been confirmed. Whether the Fitbit app will require an update remains uncertain, but the migration process will begin.

To delay the inevitable, Google is granting Fitbit users a grace period of two years. However, at some point after early 2025, all Fitbit users will be obliged to transition to a Google account. It is advisable to consider migrating sooner rather than later because, once Google logins are launched on Fitbit, certain functions will necessitate a Google sign-in. For instance, existing accounts will be unable to activate newly released Fitbit devices and features in the future.

Fitbit assures users that their privacy will be safeguarded by Google when switching to a Google login. The company also affirms that health and wellness data will not be utilized for Google Ads and will remain separate from Google Ad data.
