TikTok is one app growing in popularity even beyond Millennials and Gen Z who love creating, watching, and sharing videos. If you have just joined the app, you are perhaps still trying to find your way around. Well, it is time to go beyond viewing other people’s content to creating your own and exploring some hidden functions. In this case, this article features some of the best tips and hacks to help you have even more fun as a newbie on Tiktok. 

Navigating TikTok: The Basics

Home

Home has two icons; the Following feed shows you the videos from the account you are following, and For You shows you the videos that TikTok recommends for you and those trending around.

Create video

The Create video icon allows you to create your video through the record screen. Moreover, it has additional features that enable you to adjust the speed, add effects to your TikTok video like filters and beauty. You can also upload photos and videos, edit them then share with your followers

Discover

The Discover icon shows you the TikTok videos that are tagged with a trending hashtag. Also, from discover, you can find hashtags, sounds, videos, and users by just keying in the search terms. The Discover icon has a viewfinder that allows you to scan Tikcode. It is also in the Discover menu, where you can find your Tikcode. 

Inbox

Inbox icon had the notification on mentions and comments and a highlight of activities on your shared videos. You can find your private messages and reply to them from the Envelope icon at the corner of the Inbox.

Me

The Me feed allows you to create a profile and bio that will be visible to other users. Me shows your public videos, your followers, who you have followed, favorite videos, number of likes on your videos, and the social media account you have linked like YouTube and Instagram.

Searching videos on TikTok

From the menu bar, click Home; In the Following, you will find the videos from the users you follow. And, in the For You icon, you will find the videos recommended to you by TikTok. TikTok also allows you to find videos by user, sound, effect, or hashtag. You need to find the user’s name, sound link, the name of the effect, or the hashtag to search for more videos through the Discover icon. Moreover, the BookMark icon, which is also on the menu bar, has videos you liked, saved for later, or favorited. 

Download TikTok videos on your Mac

It is possible to download TikTok videos on your device but remember, the app is mobile-first.  You will need a way around if you want to download videos on desktop devices like Mac and PC. If you are using a Mac, for example, you can use the right tiktok downloader to bypass the restrictions & limitations. Some good examples of TikTok downloaders you can use are Downie, Elmedia, and Pulltube, etc. Just find one that works best for you!

Finding Tikcode

When you share your Tikcode with friends, it becomes easy for them to find you on TikTok as they are only required to scan it. Find your Tikcode by clicking the Me icon on the menu bar. Then, at the top of the icon, just next to your name, tap on the four squares icon. The Tikcode will appear; save and share it. Alternatively, you can click on Discover, and next to the search field is a scan icon. At the bottom, click on My Tikcode, save, and share it.

Scanning a Tikcode

Scanning on a Tikcode allows you to find a TikTok user quickly. Click on the Me icon and then on the four squares next to your name. Next to your Tikcode is an option to scan a Tikcode. In the frame, align the QR code for scanning. Alternatively, on the Discover icon, tap on the scan icon and pick My TikCode.

Adding sound to a TikTok video

Once you create your video, you can add sound to it. At the top of your Camera screen, tap on the Sound Link, and a pop-up page will appear where you can add, find and select the sound you want to apply to your video. Moreover. If you upload a video or photo on TikTok, the Preview screen gives you an option to add sounds.

Adding tags

You can add a hashtag or tag another user in your TikTok video’s description or in the comment section. Tap on the hashtag button, and you will get options of trending tags, but also you can create your hashtag. Tag a user by tapping on the “@’ followed by the user name. As you type the user’s name, TikTok will give you similar name suggestions; click on the user you want to tag. 

Follow a user

Following a TikTok user allows you to view their profile in the Me and Following icon. When they upload a video, you will view it in the Following feed under the Home icon. Follow a user by tapping the follow button under their user profiles. If you are watching content and want to follow that content creator, just long-press the ‘+’ sign below their profile picture on the video’s left side.

Commenting on TikTok

TikTok allows you to engage in a conversation with another user. You can comment on the video you are watching by tapping on the comment button on the video’s right side. A comment screen will pop- up where you can read comments by other users, like them, reply to them, or write your own. You can add emojis, hashtags, or tag other users; tap on Send to post your comment.

TikTok duet video

Duet allows you to record a split-screen of yourself and another TikTok video. Create a duet by tapping on the Share button of a video, which will only be available if the creator has enabled sharing. Tap the Duet icon and start recording the video; you can add effects or adjust beauty. Repeat recording until you get a perfect clip. Once done, tap on Next, adjust preferences, then Tap on Post.

Inviting friends on TikTok

Invite your friends on TikTok by clicking on Me on the menu bar. In the Me icon corner, Tap the symbol on add person and then tap on invite friends. Click on the social media platforms through which you want to share your invite link. Moreover, TikTok can help build your business when you have many followers. You can use it for advertising products or services and creating brand awareness among the followers.
