The power of planning should never be underestimated. Sure, it’s true that going in without a plan can sometimes yield more exciting results. After all, everything is so unpredictable that any plan is likely to be torn apart anyway, right?

The problem with this outlook? It doesn’t belong in the world of Business. You simply won’t be running the business – or yourself – to its fullest potential. Going into a business endeavor without a proper business plan could even spell disaster for your career choice. Definitely a risky practice.

There are still many entrepreneurs out there who seem to dismiss the importance of a business plan. If they do have one, it’s very vague and informal. Often, it can be boiled down to “produce products, get money”. But there are so many disadvantages for people who don’t bother developing a business plan.

We’re going to take a look at business plans. How exactly do they help you? What do you need to include in them? How do you actually create them? Let’s take a look.

How does a business plan actually help?

There are obvious answers to this question. First of all, they give you a sense of direction. Business plans allow you to come up with goals. You can then assess the best ways to meet those goals. But there are helpful things you may not have considered yet. Did you know that a strong business plan is often vital to raising capital for your venture? Check out for more information about getting capital.

What do I need to think about?

You’ve got a lot to think about. After all, your business plan should be developed before you start to make any moves. You should write down the basic concept. You should detail the products or services you’re actually going to be selling. Why should they be on the market? What good do they provide? How are they actually any better than what’s already out there? You also need to consider things like the type of people you’ll recruit, as well as your business location. Whether you’re planning on working in a rented office or using a virtual address and working from home, it should be included here. Read more about the latter over at

Creation and presentation

For many entrepreneurs, a business plan will be a multiple-page document. You’ll draft it out with notes made on computers, as well as with pens and paper. Then, you’ll start to create neat drafts using word processors and spreadsheet programs. This will then be compiled into a document consisting of several pages. Of course, you’ve got to remember that others will want to see this. Ensure you get the plan in formats like PDF. You should also make sure you’ve got a shorter version of your business plan. This will see you taking all the key elements and putting it into one or two pages. This can help you develop something like an elevator pitch. Read more about elevator pitches for businesses at
