Report: Facebook Has Failed To Clean Up Fake Product Reviews

The Facebook platform was designed to connect people from around the world based upon their common interests. And while that can be a beautiful thing, it can also lead to the site being used to facilitate some pretty shady business. One of those thriving underground online markets involves the sale and trade of fake product reviews. And one consumer advocacy group has had enough, calling out the social media giant this week for doing little to stop the practice.

According to the organization, called Which?, it found more than 55,000 posts across nine Facebook groups trading fake reviews—and that was just in the month of July alone. Of course, that is also likely just a fraction of the total number of these groups out there on Facebook.

“Facebook has systematically failed to take action while its platform continues to be plagued with fake review groups generating thousands of posts a day,” said Natalie Hitch, the head of products and services for Which? “It is deeply concerning that the company continues to leave customers exposed to poor-quality or unsafe products boosted by misleading and disingenuous reviews.”

As far as Facebook scams go, this one is underreported and not terribly harmful to the common user. However, it still contributes to a general cheapening of the platform. Add it to the list of things Facebook needs to clean up to improve its image.
