Format limit of 4GB for video files

can be removed in Android 11
The next version of Android may possibly end the file format limit of 4GB for video recording. Now Android splits camera video into parts of up to 4GB without users noticing.

4GB video file limit XDAAccording to XDA , which found the upcoming change in AOSP Gerrit, where the source code of Android is discussed, it is a matter of using a 64-bit offset in the mpeg4writer. Now that is a 32-bit offset. However, it is not yet certain that this commit will actually end up in the next version of Android, but it would be welcome with the developments in the field of smartphone cameras.

According to XDA, the use of a 32-bit limit dates from early 2014. At that time, recording video in 4k was still relatively rare; the Galaxy Note 3 was just out and was one of the first phones with the function. However, now that storage space, file systems and camera technology have all taken significant steps forward, it is considerably more likely that users will run into this 4 GB limit.

Although the ‘sewing together’ of multiple mp4 files is simply possible due to this limitation, users must use a separate third-party app for this, which is not ideal. Today, the 4GB limit on a Pixel 4 with 12 minutes of recording can be achieved, with 4k30fps with a bitrate of 48Mbps.

XDA speculates that the limitation will appear in the next major version of Android, version 11. It expects the first beta in March, exactly one year after the 10 beta.
