for Android Search engine selection screen
European search engines are expressing their dissatisfaction with Google’s plan to hold an auction for the selection of the four search engines that will be presented to Android users in a screen starting next year. They can choose one of them as the standard search engine.
Google search engine choiceThe German search engine Ecosia calls this Google selection method ‘unethical and anti-competitive’ and says that for those reasons it does not participate in ‘Google’s revenue-generating auction’. The company describes this method as monopolistic, damaging behavior, finds that Google is creating artificial scarcity with it and calls on the search giant to stop it. Ecosia believes that users deserve the option to freely choose their desired search engine and that ‘choice should not be auctioned to the highest bidder’. The search engine states that with this auction, Google has given discrimination a new form and allows everyone but themselves to pay, something that Ecosia does not want to accept.
Ecosia says it uses income to plant trees and therefore does not respond to expensive bidding wars. The company will present its options and objections to the European Commission. The French search engine Qwant also condemned Google’s safe and so did Gabriel Weinberg , CEO of DuckDuckGo. Weinberg especially criticizes the fact that you have to pay to be eligible for only four options. As a result, consumers do not get all the choices they deserve and Google benefits from that, says Weinberg.
At the beginning of this month, Google indicated that a selection screen will be available from next year, so that Android users are presented with multiple search engines as a choice when they first set up their phone. They then choose which search engine will appear in the search bar widget and which search engine is set as the default in Chrome. This choice can still be adjusted later.
This selection screen gets four search engines that users can choose from and to come to those four, Google has devised the auction method. That works on the basis of a bidding system. Search engines that register must state an amount per country that they want to pay to appear on the selection screen. In addition to its own search engine, Google shows three others based on the amount they offer. If there are fewer than three candidates, random candidates will also be listed who have applied but have not made an offer. Search engines can register until 13 September.
Google comes with this auction and the selection screen in response to a fine of 4.34 billion euros . The European Commission imposed that fine in July 2018 because Google would abuse its dominant position with Android. The search giant has appealed the fine.
