Microsoft no longer allows new customers to special German storage services

Microsoft no longer allows new customers to become a member of the service created in 2015. It made it possible to use German data centers, which Microsoft had managed by a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom to protect data.

Microsoft reports that these data centers have been shut down from its international network and that access to data stored therein is regulated by a German data trustee . It writes: “In the past three years, customer requirements have changed and the isolation of Microsoft Cloud Germany limits the ability to provide the flexibility and durability that customers ask for.” Therefore, it will not allow new customers to join this service and will not add any new services to the current offer. Existing customers can continue to use the service and be provided with security updates.

Microsoft refers in the message to its new German data center regions, which were announced in March, which must offer Azure as of the end of 2019. It had announced the special data centers in 2015 . Customers could use this at an additional cost. The management was in the hands of a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. As a result, European legislation applies to the data centers and it was possible, through the intervention of another company, to refuse requests from governments, for example. Microsoft itself also had no access to the data.

This development took place against the background of a lawsuit, in which the American government wanted access to e-mails that Microsoft had stored in Ireland. Microsoft refused that request in 2014. The case would actually be dealt with by the highest American court early this year, but that did not happen. This was due to the introduction of the US Cloud Act in March, which should make access to data in criminal investigations easier. The US government made a new request for the data under the new law, which meant that the lawsuit was no longer relevant . Microsoft agreed with this
