Dutch photonic sector receives investment of 242 million euros

cabinet, provinces, companies and universities will invest nearly a quarter of a billion euros in the Dutch Photonic Sector in the coming years. Especially the companies that make Photonic Integrated Circuits get a boost.

Of the quarter of a billion euros, the parties have 160 million euros, of which the Cabinet has 35 million euros and the provinces of Noord-Brabant, Gelderland and Overijssel account for some 62 million euros. The remaining amount comes from the business community and the universities of Eindhoven, Enschede and Nijmegen are also involved in the initiative. In addition, there is support from existing companies in the field of photonics, such as Bright Photonics, Effect Photonics, LioniX, Smart Photonics and Technobis. That writes the FD.

There would be twenty-five companies in the Netherlands that focus on the development of photonic integrated circuits, or pics, and that can use financial support. Partly with this, the Netherlands could maintain its leading position in this market. The market for photonic chips is expected to grow strongly, after which the companies must be able to stand on their own feet. Both TNO and PhotonDelta will offer a strategy for the photonic sector to the cabinet on Friday. PhotonDelta is a public-private partnership, on the initiative of Eindhoven University of Technology, which, among other things, tries to bring together different parties around photonics.

Last week , the government, Brainport Eindhoven and the province of Noord-Brabant called photonics a spearhead when they presented the so-called Brainport National Action Agenda. The photonic sector investigates the use of light instead of electrons for communication between the components of chips. This means that components can become smaller, more efficient and faster.
