Parent company Google makes independent companies

of X-projects Loon and Wing
Google parent company Alphabet has placed the Loon and Wing projects in independent companies. Loon wants to bring the internet to remote areas with balloons; Wing wants to develop delivery via drones.

Loon and Wing remain under Alphabet, the company reports , but they are no longer ‘moonshots’ under X. This indicates that Alphabet thinks that the companies can stand on their own two feet and thus become profitable companies in the long term.

Loon already provided hundreds of thousands of Puerto Rico residents with a 4g connection last year. Wing wants to reduce the costs and the environmental effects of transport by transporting goods through the air via drones. Apart from Google, Alphabet has more companies under its wings, such as Verily for e-health and Waymo for independent driving. Google X is Alphabet’s testing ground, in which the company investigates whether projects can lead to independent companies.
