Medical Touchscreen Displays

Touchscreens are widely used in various applications in the field of medical care. Almost all medical equipment today are electronic devices and/or have an important component acting as customer interface which is electronic. E.g. Patient monitors are electronic equipment. Even diagnostic equipment such as Ultrasound machines and X-Ray machines have console for receiving user inputs and imaging settings. Many of the recent ultrasound machine models come with touchpads.  Medical Touchscreen Displays offer a simpler, intuitive, interactive, efficient and more accurate interaction and access to patient data to Doctors, nurses and para-medical teams and are really helpful in handling of complex medical instruments and devices during patient care. Displays in medical equipment often get damaged, faulty or deteriorate in performance. Like many spare parts, these can also be repaired or replaced in medical equipment. What are touchscreen displays?

A touchscreen is the assembly of both an input (‘touch panel’) and output (‘display’) device. The touch panel is normally layered on the top of an electronic display of an electronic device. The display may be an LCD, AMOLED or OLED display.

The touchscreen enables the user to interact directly with what is displayed, rather than using a keyboard, mouse, trackball or trackpad etc. A user can give input through simply touching the screen with a special stylus or one or more fingers. There are many types of touch screen monitor: Resistive, Surface Capacitive, Projected Capacitive, Surface Acoustic Wave etc.

Special features of medical touchscreen displays

Medical touchscreen displays not only have to be easy to use and accurate but be simpler with minimal tooling. They often have to be lightweight as they may be integrated into a handheld input device. On the other hand they may have to be heavy-duty, wear-resistant, shielded devices for operating room environment, so as to withstand regular cleaning and sterilizations and also prevent electrical interference from other equipment in the OR.

Touchscreens used in medical equipment need to meet stringent standards of rough use, as they may be used with scalpels, pointing devices, gloved fingers or bare fingers and yet be scratch resistant and not be damaged.

Some touchpads or touchscreens may come with a combination of optical film enhancement technology combined with the highest-performance LED backlights, so as maximise display optics and durability. This is essential so as to not compromise with image quality and diagnostic accuracy.
