The San Francisco-based company is one of the world’s most ambitious artificial intelligence labs. It enjoys a solid backing from Microsoft, which plans to pump in a further $10 billion into its well-oiled machinery to acquire 49% stakes. 

Right after the release of the ChatGPT, OpenAI was valued at a jaw-dropping $29 billion. A while ago, it caught the attention of the world thanks to its DALL-E 2, which lets users create digital images just by describing what they want to see.

Prof Michael Wooldridge warns us about the other side of the new AI tool, while bursting the bubble – “One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities.” Wooldridge further adds, “It doesn’t know what’s true or false. It doesn’t know about the world. You should absolutely not trust it. You need to check what it says.”

Hence, he brushes aside theories of AI having its near-prime form – “We are nowhere near the Hollywood dream of AI. It cannot tie a pair of shoelaces or ride a bicycle. If you ask it for a recipe for an omelet, it’ll probably do a good job, but that doesn’t mean it knows what an omelet is.”

ChatGPT OpenAI: Raising the Alarm Already

Though it’s early days, the ChatGPT OpenAI’s recent exploits call for an extra cushion of caution. Taking note of the rampant misuse of this new tool by students (for sailing through project deadlines during the final hours), the NYC education department has gone to the extent of blocking ChatGPT on school devices and networks. They have cited “negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content,” to be the reason behind this move. 

“Due to concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content, access to ChatGPT is restricted on New York City Public Schools’ networks and devices,” said education department spokesperson Jenna Lyle. “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success.”, she further added. 

The public schools system of Seattle has also followed suit. On the other hand, many universities have now started to change their approach towards the teaching-learning process, in order to combat the many facets of ChatGPT. 

“What’s happening in class is no longer going to be, ‘Here are some questions — let’s talk about it between us human beings,’” said Antony Aumann, a professor of philosophy at Northern Michigan University.
