ChatGPT OpenAI: Birth of Another Frankenstein’s Monster?

‘ChatGPT OpenAI’ – you must have come across these words, of late. Either through conversations on personal chat boxes and WhatsApp groups, social media platforms or through digital or print media.

It’s almost everywhere. For your own sake, don’t mix it with any other social media sensation that remains on trending for a couple of days and fades away in nonchalance. It has created a ruckus on the internet and has become the talk of the tech town.

People are hitting the keypads of their smartphones with utmost curiosity as search results for ‘ChatGPT OpenAI’, ‘OpenAI ChatGPT’, ‘What is ChatGPT’, ‘How to Use ChatGPT’ pop up on their screen. But there’s a catch. There’s a strong speculation that the OpenAI ChatGPT will soon become a force to reckon with and could well change the very manner in which people seek answers to their queries.

But AI chatbots are nothing new, we have had the opportunity to encounter many of them over the last few years and most of them caused frustration with dismal performances. Little did they help in materializing the dream of many power players from the tech world to revolutionize AI tools to add life-like elements and realistic thought (? or program?) processes in creating ‘natural’ conversations.

Then what’s the big deal about the ChatGPT OpenAI? For, it opens up a new ball game altogether and arguably boasts of rich potentials to turn the tables so far as the rudimentary equations of the global tech industry is concerned.

But does it really call for an alert and sharp response from us or it’s more of a clickbait? Let’s delve deeper to unwind the story as endless versions continue doing the rounds, all over the world.

Who’s There? – An Overview of What is ChatGPT

The Latin phrase cogito, ergo sum, which translates into English as ‘I think, therefore I am’, happens to form the crux of René Descartes’ philosophy. However, the way we are ‘progressing’, desperately trying to leave no stone unturned to ease our lives to the farthest extent, even the thinking hat is now being seemingly donned by some new AI chatbot. If this doesn’t sound crazy enough then don’t be disappointed, we have plenty to offer to drive you in the hammer and tongs mode.

OpenAI, which is widely regarded as one of the major forces in the world when it comes to AI tools, has sprung up a surprise recently. It has rolled out an ace from its sleeve called ChatGPT, which has almost set the internet on fire. The fact that this new AI chatbot managed to garner more than a million users within just five days of its initial launch, has reasons enough to raise eyebrows.

Now, what is ChatGPT exactly? Let’s hear first from the horse’s mouth. OpenAI itself brands its next-gen AI tool as an AI chatbot meant for ‘Optimizing Language Models for Dialogue’. It invites users to try its all-new product while declaring that they have trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way.

The ChatGPT OpenAI comes with such a dialogue format that enables it to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises and also reject inappropriate requests. OpenAI clarifies that ChatGPT is actually a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained specifically to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.

In a nutshell, it could be your go-to platform to have answers (satisfactory? in-depth?) of almost everything under the sun through simple chats, as per claims.

Tricks of the Trade: How to Use ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s sensational AI chatbot ChatGPT came into being on November 30, 2022. Since then millions of users have experienced this ‘amazing’ chatbot powered by next-gen AI. For your information, it’s still in the process of developing and OpenAI is accumulating the users’ feedback and gradually learning about the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT. This process in turn is helping the AI giant to sharpen the edges of its new AI chatbot.

Now, the question is, how you can use it, as the discussions on the OpenAI ChatGPT so far, have already rung a bell or two in your ears. Till date, OpenAI is not charging a single penny from the millions of users who are still in awe, while exploring the possibilities of this extremely powerful tool.

You can head straight to chat.openai.com to try the all-new ChatGPT OpenAI, for free. You will find a box that will pop up, where you can type your question and within blink of an eye, the specially trained chatbot will get back to you with suitable answers that resolve all your queries. And unlike most other AI chatbots (studies have revealed that more than 77% of the people exposed to AI chatbots, have found them annoying and useless), the ChatGPT patiently answers even your follow-up questions.

If you want to use the new AI chatbot more seamlessly, then you can add the special Chrome extension called ChatGPT for Google, which would be of great help. Meanwhile, you can go through our special copy on the new Chrome extensions to know about more such exciting Chrome extensions, introduced lately.

You can give it a shot today itself to truly realize what exactly it brings on to the table, forget turning them.

Going Pro Soon, Would be Chargeable

However, OpenAI is reported to incur huge operational costs to ensure the smooth functioning of its new product, as users from every nook and corner of the world are trying to become familiar with this high-tech AI tool. One gets bamboozled to know that the costs amount up to around $3 million per month, which is almost $100,000 per day – quite a hefty figure.

Hence, as expected, this service will soon become chargeable. OpenAI is going to roll out a pro version of its product, which would be known as ChatGPT Professional, in all likelihood. Recently, in its Discord server, OpenAI has asked “At what price (per month) would you consider ChatGPT to be so expensive that you would not consider buying it?”, which sets all speculations to rest.

However, most probably the basic version will be right there for usage, at no cost.

ChatGPT OpenAI: User Feedback and Thoughts of Experts

We have witnessed mixed reactions so far and some of them have initiated heated debates raging on social media and critical arguments and counter arguments from AI researchers, tech pundits, social scientists, educationists and even psychologists. Let’s go through some of them to have an essence, which will help us in coming to terms with a better understanding.

Elon Musk, one of the most influential persons on this planet, let alone the tech world, has termed the OpenAI ChatGPT as “scary good”, something which speaks volumes about its huge potential. However, many experts beg to differ. Let’s have a look at what they have to opine.

For instance, Prof Michael Wooldridge, who happens to be the director of foundational AI research at the Alan Turing Institute in London, is excited about the new tool – “These are the first systems that I can genuinely get excited about. It would take 1,000 human lifetimes to read the amount of text the system was trained on and hidden away in all of that text is an awful lot of knowledge about the world.”

For the uninitiated, Wooldridge offers a useful clarification in simple words. He says, “If I write a text message to my wife that starts: ‘I’m going to be …’ it might suggest the next words ‘in the pub’ or ‘late’, because it’s looked at all the messages I’ve sent to my wife and learned that these are the most likely ways I’ll complete that sentence. ChatGPT does exactly the same thing on a massively large scale.”

Many users have found it useful in helping them to spot and fix errors in their programming codes. Like a guy named Amjad Masad was more than surprised with the results he got.

The Meteoric Rise of OpenAI

The San Francisco-based company is one of the world’s most ambitious artificial intelligence labs. It enjoys a solid backing from Microsoft, which plans to pump in a further $10 billion into its well-oiled machinery to acquire 49% stakes.

Right after the release of the ChatGPT, OpenAI was valued at a jaw-dropping $29 billion. A while ago, it caught the attention of the world thanks to its DALL-E 2, which lets users create digital images just by describing what they want to see.

Earlier, it came up with GPT-3, the natural-language system that can write, argue and code. Interestingly, the new ChatGPT happens to be its successor, which has gone through an unimaginable upgrade.

The way things stand as of now, the OpenAI juggernaut can turn out to be a party-spoiler for the other top AI labs out there like DeepMind, which created history a couple months back, with the Deepmind AI Protein Structure

ChatGPT OpenAI: Why Should Google Remain Cautious?

Google has every reason to put its guard high, as OpenAI goes all guns blazing in the war for the bragging rights of the AI world, as its ChatGPT continues to run riot through the world with its basic version.

Firstly, there’s immense pressure on Google’s parent company Alphabet. Of late, the company’s robot software firm, Intrinsic, laid off 40 employees to add to the worries of global tech layoffs. This certainly lets the cat out of the bag.

Secondly, according to many experts, if unchecked, the astronomical surge of ChatGPT could go on to change the very approach of users, who would prefer to find answers to their questions over chats with AI chatbots, instead of going to Google and searching for a query.

Therefore, in such a scenario Google must pull up its shocks as OpenAI can no longer be considered a newbie. There’s an elephant in the room and Google has decided to remain tight-lipped for the time being. It would be an extremely interesting affair to see how it responds to the tricky situation.

Is AI Going to Take Over?

Ever since we encountered the idea and the term ‘robots’ in Karel Capek’s R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) in 1920, the cloud of robots and later on AI getting the better of us, has loomed large with the passage of time. We even saw the murder of human beings not only in the pages of books or on screens, but in real life, when a robot actually took the toll of a worker at a Volkswagen car factory in Germany on July 1, 2015.

But going by Gertrude Stein, ‘an AI is an AI, is an AI, is an AI’. Therefore, such an assumption is not going to have any fuel, forget strong grounds, even in the distant future. For, AI can’t think. It can’t analyze things independently. It can never ever replace human beings. With the ChatGPT we have started to see that it can only deliver within a certain periphery.

Prof Michael Wooldridge warns us about the other side of the new AI tool, while bursting the bubble – “One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities.” Wooldridge further adds, “It doesn’t know what’s true or false. It doesn’t know about the world. You should absolutely not trust it. You need to check what it says.”

Hence, he brushes aside theories of AI having its near-prime form – “We are nowhere near the Hollywood dream of AI. It cannot tie a pair of shoelaces or ride a bicycle. If you ask it for a recipe for an omelet, it’ll probably do a good job, but that doesn’t mean it knows what an omelet is.”

Just to remind you, we saw the disastrous fate of AI games on Steam, just a month ago. Humane elements are instrumental to engaging content.

ChatGPT OpenAI: Raising the Alarm Already

Though it’s early days, the ChatGPT OpenAI’s recent exploits call for an extra cushion of caution. Taking note of the rampant misuse of this new tool by students (for sailing through project deadlines during the final hours), the NYC education department has gone to the extent of blocking ChatGPT on school devices and networks. They have cited “negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content,” to be the reason behind this move.

“Due to concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content, access to ChatGPT is restricted on New York City Public Schools’ networks and devices,” said education department spokesperson Jenna Lyle. “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success.”, she further added.

The public schools system of Seattle has also followed suit. On the other hand, many universities have now started to change their approach towards the teaching-learning process, in order to combat the many facets of ChatGPT.

“What’s happening in class is no longer going to be, ‘Here are some questions — let’s talk about it between us human beings,’” said Antony Aumann, a professor of philosophy at Northern Michigan University.

Therefore, people from different spheres have started to put on strong guards against what is being termed as the next big thing in the tech world. We will keep a close tab on how it unfolds and get back to you with exclusive updates.
