Is it enough to justify the switch for those who now own the iPhone X? This model, from four years ago, already brings facial recognition and wireless charging. In the following lines, find out what changes between smartphone generations.

Screen and design

The screens of the two Apple phones have a slight difference in size, as the iPhone 14 brings 6.1 inches, while the iPhone X includes 5.8 inches. The display takes up the entire front of the device.

There is another relevant difference, as the older model was the first from the manufacturer to feature an OLED display, while the newer one features the Super Retina XDR Display. In practice, the technology interferes positively in terms of sharpness. The notch is still present in both models.

The iPhone 14 follows the Full HD+ resolution (2532 X 1170 pixels), which gives a rate of 460 pixels per inch. The iPhone X, on the other hand, is slightly smaller, but also with Full HD+ (2436 x 1125 pixels) and a rate of 458 pixels per inch. The datasheet still mentions for the model has 625 nits of brightness, while the new device scores 800 nits and peaks at 1,200 nits, which means comfort in a sunny environment.

The design aesthetics are similar. The structure of the phone is the production of the more square base and flattened sides, in a design quite similar to iPhone models of past generations, such as the iPhone 5, example. Overall, the edges are much reduced.

There is a noticeable difference in the arrangement of the cameras on the back of the smartphones. On the new iPhone, the lenses are positioned diagonally on a square base. Meanwhile, the iPhone X has two lenses underneath each other on an oval base.

Cameras

Both models feature a photographic arrangement with a set of dual cameras on the rear in the datasheet. Apple has chosen to bring a larger lens aperture in the new generation and therefore tends to ensure superior performance in night and low-light photos.

The iPhone 14 datasheet brings the camera set like this:

  • 12 MP main (f/1.5)
  • 12 MP Ultra Wide (f/2.4)
  • 12 MP front camera (f/1.9)

The camera structure on the iPhone X, on the other hand, is as follows:

  • 12 MP main (f/1.8)
  • 12 MP Ultra-wide (f/2.4)
  • 7 MP front camera (f/2.2)

The iPhone 14’s photographic arrangement has gained improvements in the front camera. According to Apple, the larger sensor can capture 38% more light in dimly lit environments – the new feature applies to both photos and videos. The new lineup also brings optical image stabilization with sensor shift, which should result in fewer blurry records than in the previous generation.

Moving on to video tools, smartphones are available to record movies in 4K, with HDR, as well as having an optical image stabilization (OIS) function to smooth out motion capture. The new line also features Cinema Mode, in which it is possible to blur the background of people and objects for a more sophisticated and professional look.

Performance and Storage

The data sheet of the conventional iPhone 14 does not include the new A16 Bionic processor. The manufacturer decided to put the more powerful chip only in the most sophisticated versions of the new line, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Thus, the new phone features the same processor as the iPhone 13: the competent A15 Bionic, with a six-core CPU (two high-performance and four energy-efficient).

The iPhone X comes standard with Apple’s six-core A11 Bionic processor. The graphics capability of the 14 includes a chip with five cores, up from three. In other words, users should notice a slight improvement, but nothing glaring.

Apple does not usually offer information about the RAM of the devices. Benchmark tests suggest that the iPhone X has 3 GB, while the iPhone 14 would come with 6 GB, twice the capacity. There is no doubt that former owners of the past generation will notice more speed in the new device.

The new version of Apple’s phone already starts with 128 GB of capacity and even brings the possibility of 256 GB and 512 GB. The iPhone X, on the other hand, has two capacity options: 64 GB and 256 GB. It is worth mentioning that both models do not support microSD-type memory cards.

Battery

Apple also does not reveal the battery capacity of the iPhones, but it is indicated, according to company information, that the iPhone 14 allows up to 20 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14, 16 hours of streaming video, and 80 hours of audio playback. Whereas the older model allows the user up to 13 hours of video playback and up to 60 hours of audio playback.

The specialized phone site GSM Arena estimates that the iPhone X has a 2,716 mAh component, while the iPhone 14 would bring 3,279 mAh. In this sense, the distinction between the two generations of iPhones is significant.

Although the iPhone X is compatible with wireless charging with the Qi standard, the device does not have support for wireless charging via MagSafe. This technology is important because the ring of magnets s ensures that the device will always be positioned the right way. In the past, there was a risk that the user would position the device incorrectly in the charging base.

Both Apple phones are compatible with 20W fast charging. This means it is possible to take the battery of the models from zero to 50 percent in 30 minutes. Apple does not include it in the box, which has given the company headaches.

iOS system

The iPhone 14 arrived with iOS 16, the most current version of the operating system. Among the new features is the new lock screen, as well as advanced notifications. It is worth noting that the concept of the new system is designed for the customization of the device’s control center.

Meanwhile, the iPhone X leaves the factory with 2017’s iOS 11. The model also runs iOS 16. In other words, those who have an older smartphone do not have to run to the new one if the only motivation is the desire to have the latest system.

Additional Features

The iPhone 14 mentions support for a 5G connection in its datasheet. The new mobile network is already present in several metropolises and follows its expansion plan. This new connection availability suggests that the internet speed can be up to 50 times faster than 4G. The iPhone X only offers 4G, which was dominant at the time of its launch. When entering an area covered by the new technology, users should notice a significant difference.

Another unique feature of the new generation that catches the eye is Accident Detection. This means, that the device can identify if the user is in a car accident to notify the local emergency services. Still regarding the iPhone 14, another positive aspect is the possibility of having Bluetooth 5.3, which is faster than the Bluetooth 5.0 of the X.

Both phones feature NFC technology, which allows you to make payments by proximity without needing a card to perform the procedure. The TrueDepth technology, also present in both devices, also features Face ID, the phone’s facial unlocking function.

Price and Availability

The iPhone X was launched in 2017, today it goes for $240 on Amazon. Despite being on sale, the product is no longer manufactured and is not part of Apple’s official catalog. In all, it comes in two available shades: silver and space gray.

The iPhone 14 has a retail price of $799 for the 128 GB version. There are five color options: blue, purple, midnight (graphite), stellar (white), and red.
