How To Turn On FileVault In Mac To Encrypt The Startup Disk?

Want to turn on Filevault to encrypt your files and secure it from unauthorized access? No need to dig any deeper as you’ve already reached your destination. Note that FileVault feature is available for OS X Lion and later and can be used to encrypt files on all Mac device. To enable FileVault on your device first make sure to log in with your account.

  • Click on the Apple Menu on your screen and then click on System Preferences.
  • Select Security & Privacy and then click on the FileVault tab.
  • Select the lock icon and then enter your administrator username and password in the labelled field.
  • At last, select Turn on FileVault tab.
  • If you have multiple user accounts on your Mac, you can enable the service for each one of it by selecting Enable User option right in front of their account name. To activate FileVault on each account, you will have to enter a password to verify your identity.

After enabling FileVault on your device, now you will have to add recovery options to your unlock your disk if you ever forget your account password.

  • For OS X Yosemite or later, use your iCloud account to unlock your disk and then reset your password.
  • For OS X Mavericks, you can use security questions feature and then by answering them accurately you will gain access to your PC.
  • In case for any reason you don’t want to use iCloud FileVault recovery, you can simply create a local recovery key and then use it to gain access to your account when you forget your password.

Note that make sure to store your local recovery key somewhere safe as if you would forget both your password and recovery key, you can never gain access to your stored data in Mac. The encryption of your data can take some time and will run in the background. To check the progress, go to Security & Privacy and then click on the FileVault section. All your new files would get encrypted automatically as you save them in your startup disk. As soon as the FileVault setup finishes, you will need to restart your computer. After the restart, enter your account password to unlock the disk. Note that you will need to enter your account password every time you open your Mac to unlock the disk.
