OPPO Shows Off Retractable Screen Smartphone Concept at INNO Day 2020

OPPO Retractable Screen Smartphone Concept: Folding phones have been quite the rage, and as the first-gen tech approaches refinement and acceptance, more and more companies are showing interest in hopping on-board. With flexible screens in the picture, manufacturers have the liberty to make a larger number of use cases than with just a fixed piece of glass. OPPO showed off its version alongside some other tech pieces at its INNO Day 2020 on November 17.

OPPO X 2021 Foldable Phone Concept

OPPO has been a strong authority in showing off concept smartphones with new tricks and gimmicky tech, but it failed to take into production its foldable phone concept that it had showcased earlier. This time around, the Chinese smartphone maker takes a dip into the segment with the X 2021 Concept at its 2nd Inno Day event.

The concept smartphone features a 6.7-inch OLED panel that can grow up to 7.4-inch while not having a crease like some other foldable smartphones in the market. OPPO will be using a Roll Motor powertrain for extension and retraction of the display, and sudden push and pull will not end up damaging the mechanism.

The Chinese firm claims that it will be using a plethora of mechanisms for achieving results. It will be using Two in One Plate to support the display and a Warp Track which resembles a caterpillar track that will offer better rigidity to the extension-retraction mechanism.

It is unclear as to what sort of screen tech the company will opt for, plastic or flexible glass. Alongside this, while many other aspects of the concept device still remain in the dark, what looks commendable is the use of the folding ability to offer better use case scenario. The commercial reality of the project also seems unclear right now.

AR Glass 2 & CybeReal AR App

OPPO also followed up its last year’s AR Glass concept with the AR Glass 2. They claim that the sleeker-looking pair of spectacles are 75% lighter than the previous-gen. A stereo fisheye camera, standard RGB camera, and a 3D ToF sensor set-up provides functionality for Mixed Reality and Augmented Reality. It claims to support smartphone integration alongside gesture-based interactions and can perform 3D spatial localization in milliseconds.

OPPO will promote viewing multimedia content and playing AR-based games super-imposed onto the real world as its main talking points. OPPO also claimed to have support for AR-based home furnishing through JD.com’s app.

OPPO’s CybeReal AR App features precise localization and scene recognition, and digital reconstruction, but its main selling point will be indoor navigation. It will use collection resources including WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, cameras, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms, and machine learning, amongst many others, to enable users to use the application to full capacity.
