POCO M2 is the latest smartphone to join the Poco family. POCO, just like its parent company, has been fairly consistent in launching smartphones this year, even though they are barely distinguishable from their Redmi counterpart. It’s been only a month since POCO announced the M2 Pro, and today they’ve launched POCO M2. Here’s everything you need to know about the device.
POCO M2 Design and Specifications: Another Re-branded Redmi 9?
If you look closely, yes, this is another rebranded Redmi device. The device is very similar to newly launched Redmi 9 Prime. Quite weirdly, the phone lacks support for 5GHz WiFi networks.
On the front of POCO M2 is a 6.53-inch Full HD+ LCD display, with a resolution of 2340 x 1080. It boasts a peak brightness of 400 nits and has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The phone comes with a standard 60Hz refresh rate display, unlike the newly launched POCO X3 that houses 120Hz refresh rate panel. On the front, you will notice a waterdrop notch up top, which houses its 8MP front camera. The phone also features Gorilla Glass 3 and is coated with P2i’s nano-coating.
POCO M2 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G80 processor — the same chipset used in Redmi 9 Prime. Mediatek Helio G80 is an octa-core chipset that has two 2GHz Cortex-A75 cores and six 1.8GHz Cortex-A55 CPUs. The phone also features ARM Mali-G52 GPU.
It’s got a 6GB LPDDR4x RAM inside, which is 2GB more as compared to the Redmi counterpart. The phone has a 128GB eMMC 5.1 of onboard storage, which expandable up to 512GB via the dedicated MicroSD card slot. The phone also has an IR blaster on top.
On the connectivity front, POCO M2 features Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (no 5GHz network support) and Bluetooth 5.0.
One of the key highlights of the phone is the included 5,000 mAh battery that is capable of 18W fast charging. POCO says that the phone could even last for two straight days, though we highly doubt this claim. The phone has a USB Type-C port for charging, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack for all those asking. Sadly, the phone comes with 10W charger in the box, and you’ll have to buy a separate 18W charger to take advantage of that 18W fast charging.
On the back of POCO M2 is the quad-camera setup that sits on top of the capacitive fingerprint sensor. This setup includes a 13MP (f/2.2) primary camera, an 8MP (f/2.0) ultra-wide-angle lens with 118.2 degrees Field of View (FOV), a 5MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. As mentioned before, the front camera is an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture.
Surprisingly, the M2 runs on the MIUI 11 for POCO based on Android 10, instead of MIUI 12. POCO says the device will be updated to MIUI 12 soon. The phone has a POCO launcher built-in right in. Just like other POCO devices, the M2 won’t come with any ads like other MIUI-running smartphones sold under the Mi and Redmi brand.
