Streaming on Netflix, The Claudia Kishi Club is a documentary by Sue Ding and is an honour to our favourite character of The Baby-Sitters Club. I have always adored and admired Claudia Kishi and she still remains as my favourite character from the series (adapted from the novels).

This documentary is all about celebrating all that Claudia Kishi is and has been for readers and watchers of The Baby-Sitters Club. Through DIY-stop motion with the help of picture collages, this documentary talks about how impactful Claudia Kishi’s character has been to the Asian-American audience.

If you have grown up reading The Baby-Sitters Club or even watched the series streaming on Netflix, you will need no introduction to the character. You exactly know why there is a whole separate documentary dedicated to the Claudia Kishi lovers! 

Claudia Kishi is hands-down the most interesting character of The Baby-Sitters Club. She is clever, amusing, humorous and all-in-all an absolute badass! The Claudia Kishi Club has shown how big of an icon she was through not being the stereotyped Asian-American Kid. This valuable representation of an Asian-American during the ’80s and ’90s portray the nuanced and layered character that Claudia Kishi was, rather, still lives on to be!

She has broken the glass ceiling, swiftly moved past stereotypes and archetypes that inspired many Asian-American children and teenagers. The Claudia Kishi Club speaks volumes about the profound impact that this Japanese-American girl has had in steering the narrative towards a direction that has flouted how a typical nerdy Asian-American is expected to be.

Miss Kishi is not great at academics, almost struggles with Mathematics but is brilliant and dedicated to what she loves to do! During the 80s and the 90s, this shift in the whole idea and to portray that on-screen had to be a brave thing to do. Claudi Kishi has aced being the character that refuses to cave in to this nerdy cliche.  

Claudia Kishi is an inspiration to so many artists! 

The Claudia Kishi Club has brought many such Asian-American artists in to feature in the documentary. The whole idea is to have these artists talk about how Claudia Kishi’s character has helped them believe in themselves. Artists like Yumi Sakugawa, Sarah Kuhn, and Phil Yu have come together and read out portions from the book. They fondly spoke with personal recollections of their favourite Claudia Kishi moment. These artists have discussed the importance of such a character and also her representation in the mainstream media.

We’ve spoken in ample how Kishi has been a powerful representation of a race and the character that has defied being a “model minority” and went on to become celebrated. However, many have also suggested that the novels especially don’t speak adequately or does not quite completely do justice to the nuanced and layered character of Claudia Kishi.

Netflix, just a couple of days back, started streaming The Baby-Sitters Club which is the adaptation of the novel with a few tweaks here and there. However, holding on to the original essence of the novels. In The Claudia Kishi Club, the whole narrative comprises of Claudia-centric stories where she is this particular real character who is no less than a heroine.

In the case of The Baby-Sitters Club, she was a supporting character, but even then her personality stood out the most because of how uniquely quirky Kishi was (still is). Head over to Netflix to watch the series, followed by The Claudia Kishi Club documentary.
