PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller’s Haptic Feedback Is Unlike Anything Seen Before, Says Bugsnax Dev

PlayStation 5’s new controller, DualSense, has several new features that have caught my attention. While the Adaptive Triggers are amazing in themselves, replacing the rumble motors, the new Haptic Feedback paves way for an entirely new experience. Bugsnax developers talked about how these new features help make their game more immersive in an interview with IGN.

“Previously on pretty much any console that has vibration or rumble, it’s a nice feature that sometimes can make things more immersive, but I haven’t felt anything quite as intricate and sensitive as the DualSense’s haptic feedback,” Tibitoski from studio Young Horses said.

Haptic feedback will allow the developer to make players feel the difference between Running on grass and running on water and even let players know where sound is coming from through the vibration.

“In our game, being in first person, running on different terrain, jumping in and out of water or running into bugsnax, you can feel the difference between running on grass versus running in water versus running on sand or snow.”

Previously Dirt 5 developer has also talked about how the haptic feedback makes you feel the friction rushing through a dusty land in a buggy in a way never done before. The DualSense sounds like a total game changer, that’s for sure.

In-game atmospheres are about to get much more immersive with DualSense’s Haptic Feedback too.

“There’s weather in our game and if there’s a thunderstorm and things of that nature, you can feel where the sound is coming from through the vibration,” the developer said.

The PlayStation 5 DualSense’s adaptive triggers will also play a big part while capturing bugsnax.

“[We’re] even using the light on the controller to display how endanger you are of a bugsnak escaping from a trap. We’re also using the adaptive triggers,” Tibitoski said. “Different traps have different functionalities and some of those are best exhibited through, tension in those triggers or rumble in them to make you feel like you’re really using them.”

Makes you wonder how AAA titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 would feel with these new features when it inevitably releases on the PlayStation 5, suffering the same fate as GTA V.

All the things that we’ve read about DualSense point towards one thing for sure – it truly feels like a next-gen controller. Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, coupled with the new 3D audio make it a proper generational leap from the DualShock 4.
