Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. had long held on to the belief that they will release Tenet, Nolan’s highly anticipated espionage thriller, in July. The makers were of the belief that the global coronavirus crisis would be controlled within that time, and thus they had long held on to the July 17 release date.

However, when the latest Tenet trailer dropped a few days ago, fans were quick to point out that there was no release date mentioned, just that it was coming to theatres. This caused huge speculations about whether the $200 million tentpole was coming out in July at all. Warner Bros. has now revealed that they are pushing back the release of the movie. Tenet’s new release date is July 31. Along with Tenet, theatres were also going to re-release another of Nolan’s masterpiece, Inception. It was an effort to honour the movie’s 10^th anniversary.

“We’re especially thrilled, in this complex and rapidly changing environment, to be bringing Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, a global tentpole of jaw-dropping size, scope and scale, to theatres around the world on July 31,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “It’s been longer than any of us could’ve imagined since we’ve seen a movie on the big screen, and to acknowledge Chris’ fans as we count down to Tenet’s opening day, we are also excited to offer his masterpiece ‘Inception’ in theatres for its 10th anniversary on July 17.”

Apart from Tenet, Warner Bros. has also decided to postpone Wonder Woman 1984. The movie is now expected to release on October 2, instead of its previous August 14 release. Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed for the second time now, being originally scheduled for a release on June 5. The movie is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot in the titular role.

Although some states in America have started to re-open theatres, major theatre chains such as AMC, Regal and Cinemark continue to keep their shops shut. And even if they do decide to open their doors, it is unclear how willing people will be to visit them.

Every other studio has been forced to shift or delay their movie releases. Although Warner Bros. had long held that they would release Tenet in July, they eventually had to shift the movie.

So as of now, Disney’s live-action Mulan will be the first major movie that will release, on July 24. Two other small movies, Russel Crowe’s Unhinged and Sony’s The Broken Hearts Gallery are supposed to come out on July 10.

Warner Bros. has pushed back almost all of its big release including Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical In the Heights (June 18, 2021) and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman (June 25, 2021). They also released Scoob! on digital instead of pushing it back and waiting for a theatrical release.
