OnePlus 8 Pro 5G Indian Retail Unit – What’s Different?

Count me nonplussed. I was able to get my hands on the Oneplus 8 Pro 5G along with the peeps that pre-booked the phone amidst a tense situation in Chennai thanks to the pandemic. In a way, I guess I’m a guinea pig for those of you willing to buy this phone when it does go on sale come June 15th! One swanky new OnePlus 8 Pro (Onyx Black) with 12 gigs of RAM and a nostalgia-laden Sandstone bumper case later, here are my impressions of the Indian retail unit of the OnePlus 8 Pro 5G with respect to certain controversial features/defects!

Heavy on OnePlus One Sandstone nostalgia!

Color Filter Camera “X-Ray Shooter”

The OnePlus 8 Pro for all intents and purposes is now a triple-camera phone!

Gone with the wind, my lads! As of my limited time with the Indian unit I’ve purchased, the local Oxygen OS 10.5.10 build failed to re-enable to infamous “X-Ray camera” despite countering claims from other global users. Not that I exactly miss it, but when something’s been discussed at length for so long, the curiosity does tend to get to you. I’ve always wanted to look through my TV remote y’all and my rather expensive pursuit was in vain (get your mind out of the gutter you resident perv 😉).

Black Crush and Green Tint Display

The OnePlus store executive was kind enough to unbox the phone (after sanitizing it of course) and ran a display diagnostic to check for display abnormalities at my behest. Guess what? No issues whatsoever! The display is as beautiful as OnePlus and DisplayMate touts it to be! This is the first phone I’ve used on Android without turning down the animation scale to 0.5x – it’s just THAT smooth and snappy! Perhaps my only gripe with the display on the OnePlus 8 Pro 5G is the poorly installed screen protector that comes pre-installed. The quality by itself is quite nice, but it’s poorly installed with air bubbles all around. No matter how much I coalesce and push ’em out, they keep popping up – dust I presume.

Battery Life

OnePlus 8 Pro SOT.

As of writing this article, I’ve put my OnePlus 8 Pro 5G through one charge cycle already. You know how intensive the task of setting up your phone can be, with constant downloads, installation, and account setup. Despite these tasks and my decision to leave the phone at the standard 120 Hz refresh rate on FHD+, I got a screen-on time of a hair above 7 hours at peak brightness. This is quite excellent for the hardware that the OnePlus 8 Pro pushes!

Memory Leak

12 GB of LPDDR5 and certain apps still don’t stay in memory!

Yes. This is definitely an issue. Despite packing the latest LPDDR5 RAM constraints with a copious 12 GB, the phone was relaunching apps whilst switching. I was afraid maybe I’d enabled some battery-saving mode by default, but that wasn’t the case. Apps were being relaunched despite over 8 GB of my RAM being free. This is an issue that OnePlus can easily quash with a quick software update, so please get to it!

Wireless Charging

Wireless charging on a OnePlus device – it’s about time!

I couldn’t get my hands on the proprietary 30 W charger from OnePlus to give you guys an accurate description of how effective it is, but I did try it on Samsung’s wireless fast charger and the results were rather abysmal at best considering it wasn’t compatible with the 10 W solution. I was getting slow speeds on 5 W (as to be expected) and had to pull the plug – it was begrudgingly slow! Maybe if the folks over at OnePlus are reading this, they’d be able to send in their 30 W solution for the OnePlus 8 Pro?

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m quite glad that OnePlus took their own sweet time to iron out the display issues and privacy concerns that they had with the 8 Pro in the global market before bringing it to a rather demanding set of consumers in India. My first impressions of the OnePlus 8 Pro have been nothing but positive for the time being!
