“I’m not a bag of potatoes you can transfer without my permission!” – Laura Biel

Kidnapping a girl to make her fall in Love with you sounds like a pretty absurd and unethical idea. After all, how can you force someone to fall in love with you? But somehow the idea seems to have worked for our hero Massimo in the Netflix film 365 Days.

Making its way to Netflix on June 7, the Polish romance drama 365 Days has skyrocketed to the top of Netflix’s most-watched list, despite earning some awful reviews. The film hasn’t been in buzz for its acting or a gripping story. Instead, it has been making news for its sexually-charged nature. 365 DNI, the Polish film, which means “365 Days” in English, is based on Blanka Lipińska’s book of the same name.

Are You Lost, Babygirl?

365 DNI revolves around a business executive Laura Biel (Anna-Maria Sieklucka) who takes a vacation to Sicily, where she’s kidnapped by a mafia boss (Michele Morrone) who takes power after the assassination of his father. Despite being held hostage, the boss, Massimo Torricelli, offers her 365 days to fall in love with him and promises her that he’ll do nothing to her without her consent. But Massimo, you are holding her hostage without her consent in the first place.

A constant reoccurring phrase in the movie is “are you lost, baby girl?” and honestly, she isn’t lost. The film’s depiction of the kidnapping and subsequent sexual acts has spawned controversy on the web. The film, in ways, “romanticizes kidnapping and a forced relationship.“ Even if that’s not the intent of the film, it is definitely what it portrays.

A Horrible Erotic Film?

365 Days is by far the most sexually explicit film on Netflix. Decider called it “the closest thing to porn on Netflix.” (Can’t deny!) Eventually, you might end up liking Massimo and Laura’s love but is forcing love the right way to gain it?

“Teach me to be gentle,” Massimo says this to Laura, he even says I love you to her and asks her to marry him after she too confesses her love for Massimo. All these instances are cute and make up for a good love story. A gangster falling deeply in love is beautiful but let me say it again, kidnapping and forced loved?

The film can more or less cater to the viewer’s fantasy but nothing more than that. 365 Days has been compared to the 50 Shades of Grey series with far more graphic sexual scenes. At least, there was consent in Christian Grey’s world. The depictions of BDSM and voyeurism has been a point of comparison and criticism in the film.

The End…

Laura and Massimo are finally ready to live happily ever after. A wedding date has been set, and while Massimo doesn’t yet know Laura is pregnant, surely he loves her so much, he’ll be happy about it anyhow. It seems like a happy ending. Massimo agrees to let Laura invite her Polish friend Olga to be a bridesmaid, even though he previously said no Polish guests allowed. What even is this dominance?

But then Massimo’s associate and friend learn that there is a plan for the Italian mafia to kill Laura. While Laura is on the phone with Massimo, her car goes into a tunnel. Massimo’s call with Laura drops.

His friend rushes in, and he knows she’s been attacked. What we don’t know is whether Laura is alive or dead. We never see her car leave the tunnel, and we see emergency vehicles arrive. An unsatisfying end, for sure. All the kidnapping and love for death towards the end! NO.

While Laura is seemingly dead in the movie. According to the 365 DNI book series, Laura did not die at the end of the movie. She has merely been abducted by the rival mafia family. There can be a possible sequel to the movie which isn’t announced yet.

Stream It or Skip It?

Despite being called a sexist film, 365 days was a hit in Poland, when it premiered in February. Now that it’s streaming internationally on Netflix, it’s become a hit there, too – topping the charts on Netflix. Keeping in view the buzz, everybody is heading on to Netflix for this Erotica.

Michele Morrone as Massimo is definitely a treat to watch and has gained huge stardom after 365 Days released worldwide. The strength with which the character of Laura is introduced is also commendable.

If you’re up for an Erotica with nothing more than steamy sexual sequences and an unsatisfying end on Netflix this summer, 365 Days is your movie.
