Disney Plus Finally and Officially Changed ‘The Simpsons’ Aspect Ratio

As announced earlier about how The Simpsons will be available in the 4:3 aspect ratio, it is finally here! It is official that now The Simpsons fans will be able to choose which aspect ratio they’d like to watch the animated series in. The 4:3 aspect ratio will not crop out important jokes and references anymore so that is great news.

All 30 seasons of the longest-running prime-time series would be available for viewers on Disney Plus streaming service. This change will appease the viewers who have complained about visual cues being cropped off in the 16:9 aspect ratio. The Simpsons had chosen to go with the 16:9 aspect ratio because, in 2009, it made its show in high definition.

Joe Rice, a Disney vice president, said that choosing to go with the 4:3 aspect ratio was not the easiest thing to do. If 4:3 versions of the episodes were added on Disney Plus, he mentioned that the features designed for the HD content such as the Continue Watching feature or Watchlists, would not be functional anymore on the streaming service.

Joe Rice mentioned in a statement, “It was clear that the cleanest path forward was to make a fundamental change to the content model to break the assumption that only a single version of the video would be present in any given package.”

Disney Plus, as a reason, altered how it packaged, designed and identified its content. For example, video, various audio languages and subtitles along with the artwork, descriptions and credits. Usually, a content package has a single version of a single video and Disney wanted to avoid creating one content package for each 4:3 aspect ratio episode. However, now Disney Plus has created two separate types of content packages for a single episode that will stream in both 4:3 and 16:9 formats.

Disney Plus subscribers can now choose between watching previous seasons in 4:3 aspect or 16:9 with all the modern features that will be available for each format. The promised update is finally and officially here! The episodes will still start to stream in the default aspect ratio but once the viewers click on the show description option and then click on the “Details” option available on the main menu, it will let users choose which option to go with. This option is surely going to be what The Simpsons fans originally wanted. So all it takes is a toggle switch to start watching and enjoying The Simpsons the way it was intended to be watched and enjoyed!
