The story that started with Hannah Baker is all set to see its finale on June 5th. Netflix on Wednesday released the trailer of teen high-school drama 13 Reasons Why: Season 4, which carries a lot in it. It looks like Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) and his whole friend’s group’s secrets are all bound to come out, once and for all.
“As Liberty High School’s class prepares for graduation, they are forced to make life-changing and heartbreaking choices about how their past will impact their future” -Netflix
One Last Time…
13 Reasons Why: Season 4 trailer starts with “Monty was framed” written on a wall of the Liberty High School. In the previous season, Montgomery de la Cruz aka Monty was sentenced for the murder of Bryce Walker. He was framed by Clay Jensen and group. Eventually, Monty dies in prison. The prominent addition is of Winston Williams, with whom Monty had a secret relationship. He joins Liberty High to expose the liars and to give Monty the respect he deserved.
Clay Jensen is seen struggling. It seems as if this season is going to be tough for Jensen, as he has held too much for too long. The trailer ends with a voice asking Jensen, “Are you ready to let those secrets out?”
Keeping in mind the criticism that has followed the show throughout the seasons, the stakes are high for 13 Reasons Why: Season 4. The show covers various topics such as self-harm, school shootings, drug abuse, suicide, murder and rape and is often called out for glorifying it – whether or not that is the intent.
Recap: Season 1
13 Reasons Why: Season 1 features Clay Jensen, a high school student, who receives a series of tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, another student and Clay’s crush who committed suicide. In the tapes, she mentions 13 people and the reasons associated with them which led to her taking this drastic step. Each tape has two sides and the ugly sides of people are exposed. The beauty of the first season is the time which Hannah and Clay spend together.
Clay seeks out to get justice for Hannah but gets stuck in a trap that is not to be escaped anytime soon. The first season triggered its viewers due to its bold content (rape and suicide) and was criticized by parents around the world.
Recap: Season 2
13 Reasons Why: Season 2 dealt with life after Hannah’s death, continuing the lawsuit filed by her parents against the school. They blamed the institute for ignoring her calls for help and warnings of suicides. This season wasn’t just about the lawsuit but also the fire and assault history Hannah brought into the light. Clay, along with his classmates, search for the leaked polaroids which showed the series of non-consensual sexual interactions the baseball team was involved in.
The season ends with a cliffhanger. On the night of the Spring Fling, Tyler gathers all his guns and heads toward school to seek revenge for the violence and assault against him. Clay tries to stop Tyler and the series ends with the police approaching the venue while the guns are still out in open.
The creators added trigger warning videos by the cast members in this season. Including a guide of potential triggers so that viewers aren’t as blindsided by the intentionally difficult subject matter.
Recap: Season 3
13 Reasons Why: Season 3 was more of a murder mystery than teenager issues. The previously popular jock, Bryce, had been exposed as a rapist after he abused Hannah. He gradually alienated more and more of those around him and eventually turned up dead. The question now was ‘Who killed Bryce?’
Bryce had planned to meet Jessica after the homecoming dance to give her a tape confessing to his crimes and everything he was guilty of. But a chain of events led to his murder. Although this was caused by Alex, Clay and his group decided to pin the murder on Monty since he had raped Tyler in season 2.
Clay claims his love with the new girl, Ani, who has been a close friend to Bryce. Meanwhile, Winston is determined to get justice for Monty as he knows he didn’t kill Bryce. Why does he know? Because Monty and Winston were together at the time of the murder. Season 3 ends with a fisherman coming across the assault weapons that Tyler was planning to use in his aborted mass shooting plan on the night of Spring Fling.
With the twist season 3 ended with, it would be interesting to see how the upcoming season will take place.
13 Reasons Why: Season 4 will be available to stream on Netflix from June 5th.
