Lionsgate Changes Release Dates of John Wick 4 and Other Movies

Studios around the world are changing and re-assigning dates to various movies in the pipeline. The coronavirus pandemic has pushed movies back – with production and theatre shutdowns and people forced to stay at home. And Lionsgate is also no exception.

John Wick 4

Lionsgate has re-dated several movies in its slate including big-budget movies like John Wick 4, Chaos Walking and Spiral.

The next part of the John Wick series, starring Keanu Reeves, will come out on May 27, 2022, instead of May 21, 2021. That’s a full year push for the movie, whose previous instalment, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, raked in $326.7 million at the Box Office.

Instead, Spiral, the Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson starrer SAW spinoff, will be taking over the May 21, 2021, date. Spiral follows Detective Zeke as he and his partner try to catch a killer eerily similar to Jigsaw. However, he gets too entangled in the sadistic mastermind’s morbid games. Spiral was previously supposed to release on May 2020.

Apart from these movies, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard has also been pushed back one full year – from August 28, 2020, to August 28, 2021. The first instalment was a hit for Lionsgate which grossed $180.7 million worldwide. The Ryan Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson-Salma Hayek starrer will encounter Paramount’s Paw Petrol on its new release date.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, starring Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo and Jamie Dornan will also move from July 31, 2020, to July 16, 2021. It will go against Sony’s Uncharted and Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2.

Other movies getting new release dates include The Asset (April 23, 2021) starring Michael Keaton and Maggie Q, American Underdog (December 10, 2021) and The Devil’s Light (January 8, 2021).

There are, however, a few movies on Lionsgate’s slate that are staying for a 2020 release. That includes Fatale, the Hilary Swank thriller. Its date has been moved from June 19 to October 30 where it won’t encounter any other movies.

Another 2020 release would be the sci-fi movie Voyagers starring Tye Sheridan and Lily Rose-Depp. The movie will now release on November 25 and encounter MGM’s No Time to Die and Sony/Tri-Star’s The Happiest Season.

Other movies from Lionsgate that are not budging from their 2021 release dates are The Devil’s Light (January 8), Chaos Walking (January 22) and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (March 19). Sarah Paulson starrer Run and Jesus Revolution are yet to receive a release date.

The earliest Lionsgate title that will hit the theatres (considering if things do get better) is Antebellum, which is scheduled to come out on August 21. The movie, starring Janelle Monáe, Gabourey Sidibe and Jena Malone, follows an author who finds herself in a horrifying reality and must figure out the mystery behind it.

On the other hand, for Warner Bros., the earliest release is Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on July 17 followed by Disney’s Mulan on July 24.

Damon Wolf, CMO and head of global distribution, said in a statement, “As audiences from around the world head back to theatres, most will return feeling that specialness that only the traditional theatrical experience can offer. Lionsgate is thrilled to present such a wide variety of films with many more to come.”
