Star Wars fans rejoice! Disney+ is all set to bring out a new Series with a twist. The series comes from the co-creator, show-runner and executive producer of award-winning Netflix series Russian Doll, Lesley Headland.
Although a gist of the series could be found, the exact plot is still under wraps. The series is supposed to be a female-driven action-thriller consisting of exciting martial arts elements. It is supposed to be set in an alternate timeline from the Star Wars universe.
The deal is said to have been concluded several months ago. And with that in mind, Headland attended the Los Angeles premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December.
The series is actually in pretty able hands. Headland has already received two Emmy nominations last year for the Netflix series Russian Doll, starring Natasha Lyonne. The series follows a game coder who repeatedly keeps on dying and reliving her 36th birthday. Russian Doll received a total of 13 nominations and won three.
Apart from this, she has also written and directed the 2015 film Sleeping With Other People and made her feature debut with the 2012 Bachelorette, a romantic comedy. In addition to these, she also donned the director’s hat for SMILF, Heathers, Terriers, Black Monday and Blunt Talk. Currently, she is under an overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios, which is under Disney. She is supposed to create, develop and direct series for the network, cable and streaming platforms.
Disney has some impressive series kept in the pipeline. This series will be the latest addition to the Star Wars universe, having debuted with The Mandalorian on the streamer’s release. The Jon Favreau created series is already on the works for a season 3, having already done with the second instalment. The Mandalorian was an instant hit when it came out with the streamer and became a pop culture phenomenon.
Other than The Mandalorian, there are two other live-action Star Wars shows coming to Disney+. One of them is an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor. Another one is the Cassian Andor/ Rogue One prequel series. According to Variety, Joby Harold joined as the writer for the Obi-Wan series and Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller joined the Cassian Andor series. The Rogue One series will be based on the 2016 film which will see the return of Diego Luna as the rebel Cassian Andor. Moreover, the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars is all set to come to a conclusion with season 7 on May 4.
Although Disney will be calling it quits till 2022 with The Rise of Skywalker, as it will be their last Star Wars feature film, the company is doing everything in its power to not disappoint fans. These series will provide fans with plenty of live-action Star Wars entertainment, atleast for the next few years.
Moreover, Disney is home to most of the feature films and will have all of them by mid-2020. So, binging on the Star Wars franchise will also be pretty easy.
Notably, Disney Plus crossed 50 million subscribers after just 5 months in the market.
