MediaTek or Snapdragon? Ever since the consumers have started knowing about the mobile processors, they had always been confused between the Mediatek and Snapdragon. When consumers started gaining knowledge about this, they got to know that MediaTek provides a bit lower powered mobile SoCs to provide the processors in at a lower price. In contrast, Snapdragon had always prioritised the performance over the pricing. It is one of the main reasons to use MediaTek SoCs in entry-level smartphones in the recent 4-5 years.
But with the evolution of the tech industry, MediaTek has also evolved a lot. And it is now providing exceptional performance at, still a lower price. MediaTek is giving head-to-head competition to the competitors in the mobile SoC market. Along with that, MediaTek is also working with a future vision. For example, 5G connectivity. MediaTek doesn’t compete much in the higher premium sections as others do. Instead, MediaTek emphasises over high performance in the budget.
As a result of this marketing strategy, the MediaTek Dimensity 800 has got its emergence in the market. The main goal of this processor is to provide 5G connectivity in mid-range smartphones. But MediaTek is not the only one who is looking potential in 5G connectivity in mid-range smartphones. Snapdragon is also there with its new Snapdragon 765G. So again, the question arises. Snapdragon VS MediaTek. Here we are comparing these processors side by side and will find out which one is to go with. So, let’s start this MediaTek Dimensity 800 VS Snapdragon 765G processor comparison.

CPU, Performance, & Manufacturing Process
Starting with the fabrication process, both Snapdragon 765G and Dimensity 800 comes with 7nm architecture. But there is a little difference. The 7nm fabrication on the Snapdragon 765G is EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) based on TSMC. Based on this second-generation 7nm process, TSMC claims to provide 15% to 20% higher transistor density as well as 10% lower power consumption.
In the CPU treading, the Snapdragon 765G has tri-cluster design whereas the Dimensity 800 has a dual-cluster design. The Snapdragon 765G has one prime Kryo 475 core based on Cortex-A76 at 2.4GHz. Another one Cortex-A76 Kryo 475 gold core is clocked at 2.2GHz, and the rest of the six cores are Cortex-A55 Kryo 475Silver cores at 1.8GHz frequency. In the case of Dimensity 800, there are four Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores for heavy and medium tasks, respectively. Both the clusters work at the same 2.0GHz of clock speed.
It is actually pretty difficult to say by the on-paper specs that which would perform better because one has high clock speed but fewer cores while others have more cores but less clock speed in the dense cores cluster.
GPU & Gaming
As you all know, except Snapdragon all the other mobile SoC manufacturers use GPUs directly from ARM. MediaTek Dimensity 800 also does the same. It comes with ARM Mali-G57 MP4 GPU which is a quad-core GPU and works over ARM’s new Valhall 1st gen architecture which the company’s latest mobile GPU architecture.
On the other hand, the Snapdragon 765G has the Adreno 620 GPU with a maximum clock speed of 750MHz. Both the GPUs come with game-enhancing software integrations. The Dimensity 800 has MediaTek HyperEngine gaming technology whereas the Snapdragon 765G has the Qualcomm Elite Gaming. GPU-wise both the processors are competitive and provides excellent premium mid-range performance. But we are a bit leaned towards Adreno 620 of Snapdragon 765G.
The MediaTek Dimensity 800 has the new APU3.0 design, which is a four-core APU (AI Processing Unit). After combining this APU design with the already provided CPU and GPU, Dimensity 800 can achieve a speed of 2.4 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Seconds). On the other hand, the Snapdragon 765G has the Hexagon 696 DSP which belongs to Qualcomm’s 5th Gen AI Engine. Along with provided CPU and GPU, Snapdragon 765G can go up to 5.5 TOPS in AI.
Now, the 2.4 TOPS of AI speed is not less by any means as far as we consider the mid-range segment. But it’s evident that 5.5 TOPS is way more for this comparison and the Snapdragon 765G can perform the AI tasks much faster than Dimensity 800.
Currently, the MediaTek Dimensity 800 is so new that no benchmarks are yet available. Neither AnTuTu nor Geekbench. But we have Snapdragon 765G’s AnTuTu and Geekbench scores, and we will also be updating this article as soon as the benchmarks of Dimensity 800 hit the internet.
The Snapdragon 765G has scored 3,02,847 points over the AnTuTu v8 testing which was done over the new Xiaomi Redmi K30 5G smartphone.
Over the Geekbench 4.2 benchmarking the Snapdragon 765G has scored 2,129 points in the Single-Core testing and 5,279 points in the Multi-Core testing.
Camera & Optics
The MediaTek Dimensity 800 has an unnamed ISP which company claims to have flagship-class Image Signal Processing. This ISP supports up to the 64-megapixel single camera or setup of dual-cameras in a maximum combination of 32+16-megapixels. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 765G has Qualcomm’s Spectra 355 ISP which supports up to the 36-megapixel single camera or up to 22-megapixel dual cameras with a standard set of features. But with compromises like no ZSL and MFNR can lead up to 192-megapixels in single cameras.
Both the processors are capable of shooting 4k videos at 30fps and HDR encoding and decoding, but Snapdragon 765G further supports HDR10 and 10+ content which can also enhance the display and viewing experience.
Display & Storage
Higher refresh rates in smartphones are one of the most widely provided features in smartphones and its good that mobile SoC manufacturers are optimising their SoCs for this. The MediaTek Dimensity 800 is capable of going up to 90Hz in a Full HD+ display. Its a bit disappointing that 120Hz has not been provided by-default in this SoC. In the case of Snapdragon 765G, you can go up to 120Hz in Full HD+ resolution. It also has support for QHD+ display as standard 60Hz.
Coming to Storage and Memory support, the Dimensity 800 can have up to 16GB ofLPDDR4X RAM in a dual-channel manner with a maximum frequency of 2133MHz. Whereas the Snapdragon 765G has the same RAM support but with less capacity of up to 12GB.
This section is the interesting one as both the SoCs are made with the idea of providing 5G connectivity in the upper mid-range smartphones. Both the SoCs have integrated 5G modem which means there is no need for a separate 5G modem, resulting in the prevention of extra power consumption and space in smartphone structure.
The MediaTek Dimensty 800 has the 5G integrated modem with undisclosed Downlink and Uplink speeds. MediaTek has implemented two carrier aggregation (2CC CA) which provides 30% wider high-speed layer coverage, higher average throughput, and better seamless 5G handover performance compared to other solutions, with the single carrier (1CC, no CA).
On the other hand, the Snapdragon 765G has the Qualcomm X52 5G Modem with 3.7Gbps of downlink and 1.6Gbps of uplink speed. The 4G downlink and uplink speeds are 1.2Gbps and 210Mbps, respectively. The Dimensity 800’s integrated modem also supports all connectivities ranging from 2G to 5G, just like Snapdragon 765’s.
Conclusion – Which One Is Better?
As I said in the introduction of this comparison, MediaTek carries both performance and aggressive pricing in parallel, whereas Qualcomm gives more priority to the performance. Hence, there are some compromises in the Dimensity 800 like lower refresh rates, lower clock speeds, dual-cluster design, etc. Even we believe that there would also be some compromises in the 5G modem although we can’t say it with surety as the 5G/4G connectivity speeds are unclear yet.
But these compromises are justified as far as the smartphone with Dimensity 800 comes at a lower price than Snapdragon 765G’s. But it is a commendable and excellent call from MediaTek to provide such a capable SoC which is giving a healthy competition to the latest Snapdragon 700 series processor.
