What causes moisture to invade your gun safe?

Moisture and humidity are ever-present in the air. The level of humidity may differ, but it is always there. Whenever you open the gun safe to store your firearms or take them out, a little bit of moisture gets inside with air. If you keep your safe in your basement, then even more moisture could get inside as there is more moisture in the lower parts of the house.

If the firearms were to be out in the open, they would be less likely to get rusted as the air is always flowing. But in case of a gun safe, the air stays locked in a compact area which makes the effect of the moisture even more dangerous. So, precautions must be taken to make sure that the inside of gun safes remain moisture-free.

Methods of Keeping Gun Safe Moisture-Free

There are a lot of products and methods that help you keep the moisture away from your firearms. They are described below:

1.    Dehumidifiers

The most obvious option would be to use a dehumidifier. Electric dehumidifiers keep the moisture away from their surroundings. One of the popular dehumidifiers is “Golden Rod”.

Dehumidifiers are rod-shaped devices that fit easily inside a gun safe as they don’t take up that much space. But using a dehumidifier will take some work from your part. Electric ones need to plug to an outlet. You might need to bore a hole in your safe to put a wire through it. If you don’t want to go through that hassle you should opt for a battery-powered one.

There are also desiccant dehumidifiers. These don’t require any electricity. They hold highly absorbent materials that soak up all the moisture from surrounding air. Using desiccant dehumidifiers is probably the best option for those who don’t want to spend a lot of budget for this purpose. Read More:

2.    Silica Packs

You could also opt to go with a much easier and tried and tested method of using silica packs. As you should be well aware silica packs are widely used for keeping moisture away from closed places such as from inside medicine bottles. The silica inside the packs sucks all the moisture from the surrounding air and keeps the environment dry.

Silica packs are easy to find and are quite cheap. You should use quite a few of them to keep the safe dry. You should also change the packs from time to time (usually every 2-3 weeks). You could also dry the packs up in the oven and reuse them. Make sure the packs don’t come in contact with the guns. As silica can damage metal surfaces.

3.    Putting the safe in an air-conditioned environment

This is a much simpler method. If the gun safe is in an air-conditioned room, then there is little chance of moisture getting inside of the safe. The same goes for a safe in a heated environment. All you have to do is to open up the safe from time to time and let some air in.

But one thing you should remember is that this method only works if you live in a dry environment. If the climate near you is humid then, this method won’t be effective for you. Read More:

4.    Using a lightbulb

This method is also simple and effective. You will have to put a light bulb inside your safe and run electricity through it. A sufficiently powered light bulb could easily heat up its surrounding air and make all the humidity vanish. This will help to keep the firearms dry.

This method will also require you to bore a hole in your safe to bring a wire from an outlet to the bulb. You will need to use a light bulb that is right size according to your safe. Using a small lightbulb for a big safe won’t have the desired effect.

5.    Using a case with a sealant system

Some gun safes come with a built-in sealant system. They are usually made with silicone or foam. By putting it around the inside of the door jamb, you can prevent any humidity to pass through.

In case your gun safe doesn’t have this feature, you could easily build a sealant system by using silicone.
