“Shut it down,” came the order that must be obeyed from the management of the major Polish tourist attraction known as Auschwitz.

This happened Friday (24th March) after a group of about a dozen naked Protesters stormed the camp, slaughtered a sheep, lit a fire, and chained themselves to the gate with the famous slogan “arbeit macht frei” (work sets you free). They also draped a white banner with the word “love” (in English) over the famous sign, changing the meaning to “Love macht frei” or “Love will set you free." The protesters were then arrested, and the camp reopened.

According to some witnesses, the protest was related to events in the Ukraine, where a low intensity war is still being waged in the far East of the country. But, in view of the symbolism of the site, it seems more likely that it would be a protest against Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.

The Holocaust, of which Auschwitz is the most well-known site, is often used to provide the moral justification for the existence and expansion of the state of Israel, something which is viewed by many Leftists, including some Jewish Leftists, as mere "White colonialism.”

While the significance of the protest remains unclear, the incident is mainly being reported as a “desecration” of a site considered “sacred” by secular Jews, for whom the story of the holocaust has become a kind of substitute religion.
