Want To Build a Career as a Blogger? Don’t Forget These 3 Tips

If you are interested in breaking into a career in blogging, you may think all you need is the ability to write and take decent pictures (or find decent stock photographs). Unfortunately, many other people feel the exact same way.

The field is crowded, and it takes a strong set of skills to stand out. Whether you are considering starting your own, or you want to work as a writer for others, there are ways to build the skills you need to stand out in this hyper-competitive field.

Don’t Skip Your Education

Some people are tempted to enter the blogging world because it seems like a career that you can enter easily and without specialized training. While it is true that you do not have to prove you have a degree to start a blog, the skills you learn in school will boost your chance of success.

A successful blogger must have Strong Writing Skills. Whether you are writing informative posts or short captions, the writing must be clear and accessible. You may think an online grammar tool can replace strong writing, but there is no substitute for strong writing skills.

You will also learn many other skills that are vital for a successful blog. Marketing, basic layout and design, public relations skills, and even some basic level coding experience can be helpful if you are interested in becoming a blogger.

Working toward your college degree, and using the many skills you pick up along the way, will increase your odds of success. Student loans are often necessary to pay for school, and make earning a degree accessible to people in many different financial situations.

Strengthen Your Time Management Skills

The idea may appeal to you at least partially because it allows you to be in control of your own schedule. If you are blogging for yourself or submitting work to others, you can work when you like, allowing you to plan your day in a way that makes the most sense to you. While that is true, a common issue that develops when you have an open-ended schedule is that you have trouble getting any work done.

Without hard deadlines it can be a challenge to sit down each day and put in the work necessary to build a successful blog. If you suffer from time management or organizational issues, or have faced procrastination issues in the past, you should address those obstacles before committing to becoming a full-time blogger. Without access to regular feedback, the distractions and delay tactics can be insurmountable.

Stay Informed

Once you have yours up and running, it can be tempting to focus solely on creating content and growing your audience. The problem with this is that the online world is constantly changing. If you stay in your own bubble, it is likely that you will be left behind. While you don’t want to constantly chase the latest and greatest trend or technology, it makes sense to pay attention to what some of your more successful competitors are doing.

If you see a new app or form of social media taking hold, get in early and learn to use it. Being an early adopter allows you to stand out and keeps your content fresh.
