How to Speed UP Windows 10:The Complete Guide

Microsoft’s new release of Windows 10 is a big welcome to all of us who actually love Windows.

It was initially released on July 29, 2015.

Microsoft has branded it as  a “service” rather than product which is a big step towards the evolution of Windows OS.

With many new features like smarter start menu, ability to add multiple desktops, central notification centers.

Windows 10 has come a long way in terms of look, stability and support.

Windows 10 has even also come up with extreme performance boosting features like maximizing RAM, disabling visual effects etc

But with the above many improvements and settings one area  I think is needed more attention.ie the ability to handle the Junk Files.

In this post I will try to discuss some tips about how to remove Junk files in Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 and speed up your Windows PC.

Now before going deep into the topic let us discuss about junk files itself.

What are Junk files?

The junk files are the files which are automatically created by Windows regarding our daily use of our PC and devices.

These junk files often created during installation and un-installation of applications, downloading files from internet etc.

After a period of certain period these files just accumulate the disk space and slow down your PC.

As the hard disk space is limited these junk files often slow up your PC/device and resist devices to perform optimally.

In  short these are  the junk files which you need to remove to increase the productivity of your device.

Now lets us dive deeper.

Before fully Delete the junk files you need to understand which  files  actually  we need to delete.Becasuse there are some files which if we delete as junk files it can make our PC instable.

So beware of this.

The are the below junk files in windows 7.8,10 which you can safely delete:

  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Downloaded Program Files
  • Offline Webpages
  • Recycle Bin files
  • Temporary files
  • Thumbnails
  • Old Windows folder

Now let us start the process!

In order to free up your hard disk and clean these junk files from your device there are mainly two options

1.Use the Windows inbuilt Windows Disk Clean-Up utility application.

2.Use some third party junk file removal tool.

Let us start with the first option.

#Windows The Disk Cleanup tool:

Windows The Disk Cleanup tool is a great option if you do not want to use any third party tools.

To access the utility you just have to follow the steps below:

  • Click on Start menu Windows Icon
  • Type “disk cleanup” (without the quotes)

This will open a popup giving you the option to select the drive to clean junk files.

Alternatively you can also use this using

  •  Go to File Explorer,
  • Select Properties,
  • Next click the Disk Cleanup button

This will open  the popup.

After this you get a box opened giving you the options to delete the junk files.

But the above option has some limitations.

This Windows The Disk Cleanup tool only works with Microsoft and products installed with Microsoft.

That means if you have junk files in your PC created by Windows itself then  only Windows The Disk Cleanup tool can help .

But if you have junk data created by other non-Microsoft products like Chrome or Opera.it will never work on those.

This is the biggest difference with the third party utilities like CC cleaner which can work on all Microsoft and non-Microsoft files.

Another limitation is it does not  delete temporary files that are less than seven days old.

But CC cleaner has not this type of limitation.

So my recommendation is to use CC Cleaner if you need all in one solution.

You can download CCleaner from here

#Removing Recycle Bin files:

When you delete any files, Widows by default do not delete it immediately rather than it stores in your  hard drive most typically in C drive.

It accumulates extra space in your hard drive and make your PC slow.

So you need to go to Recyle bin manually to delete it completely from Recyle bin altogether.

So if you may think why files in recycle bin does not delete files automatically?

The best logical reason is that some time we delete file accidentally or delete some files which we needed no more for current work. But later if you need them there should be an option to restore it back quickly that is why Recycle bin stores them. You can always restore it back from the Recycle bin.It acts as a placeholder.

But if you like you can instruct Windows specifically to skip this recycle bin feature altogether  and delete files without going to Recyle bin.

You can also use a special key board combination shift+Delete button in your keyboard to delete any files or folders permanently from your PC.

Pro tip:

I would also recommend for Shredding of your Recyle bin files rather than delete it normally. If you normally delete a file from recycle bin Windows simple deletes the data but keep the references of the files which can be easily restored using data recovery softwares and techniques

But if shredding is done ,the references of the data will also be destroyed and rewritten by random data which make data recovery very hard compared to normal.

For this purpose you can use HDShredder Free Edition for  windows shredding tool here.

#Temporary Files Windows 10/8/7:

Whenever you view a word document, listen to music or view your favorite videos by default windows creates a lot of junk temporary files .

If you run MS-DOS-based standard application with Windows/286, Windows/286 it can also create temporary files.

They usually slow down your PC.

You can easily identify these files as they have alphanumerical string in their name example:~PIRDFGK.TMP

These temporary files should removed using Windows Disk cleaner tool or third party tool like CC cleaner as I mentioned above.

#Remove Files of Previous Windows Installation:

This is one of the most important tip and worth a mention in this topic.

Now how did you get your Windows 10?

Did you have upgraded from old windows 7,8 then chances are there remains some junk files for this.

After installing windows 10 there is a folder called Windows.old which contains these old windows installation files.

These files are there because in case if you need to revert back to your old windows 7,8 then it can help.

I have already discussed about disk cleanup utility,if you run that you will come up an option called “Previous Windows installation(s) in which you can see how much junk data is consumed in your system.

If you are sure about the fact that you are not going back to your old windows then simply delete it.

Believe me in some cases it will free up your extra disk space almost around 20 GB.

It is really a great tip which can boost your windows speed!

#Delete Temporary internet files:

Whenever you browse your favorite news daily to read daily news or go to some ecommerce website to buy something your web browser download some temporary files into its cache.

Suppose you are visiting tekkibytes.com for the first time then your browser loads its logo or post images into its temporary cache files to speed up the loading process.

So next time when ever you come to my blog your browser don’t have to download the images every time.

The temporary internet files serve the files.

If you are using chrome just go to your address bar and type “chrome://cache/” without quotes and you can see the the temporary cache files downloaded by chrome.

The fact is it consumes some space into your hard disk and can slow your overall PC.

So you can delete these files to save up some space.

Pro Tip:

If you have a slow Internet connection like 2G you should not delete these temporary files.

Because these files will speed up your website load time and present you faster loading images.

The spaces it consumes will not affect you in this case. But if you are on really fast internet like 3Gs or 4Gs then deleting these files can really boost up your PC performance.

#Delete thumbnails:

Did you ever notice those shiny thumbnails pictures when you open up your folders?

These are called thumbnail images.

These consumes disk space in your system. So if you can free up this space you can surely free  up some disk space.

You can do this using Windows Disk cleanup tool mentioned previously in this post.

#Disable Hibernation Mode:

In Windows there is an option available called Hibernation mode.

Whenever you use this Hibernation mode your PC puts you running programs in the RAM.

So whenever you enable to restore device from Hibernation mode then it takes a lot of time to reboot the system

It typically uses more resources of your RAM.

So if you do not need this feature you can totally disable this Hibernation mode to speed up your PC.

You can do this by following this steps:

  • Start button, type “cmd” (without the quotes),
  •  Right-click cmd.exe,
  • Choose Run as Administrator,
  • and click Yes to confirm.

This is the Windows command prompt. Paste the “powercfg.exe /hibernate off” (without the quotes)

Press Enter.

This will disable the Hibernate mode and possibly speed up your PC.

Last words:

Hopefully the above tips can help you to remove junk files and help you run Windows faster.

Do you use any other tips to increase the speed?

Please share your thoughts in the comment box below!

I will be happy to hear you.

Have a good day!
