The End Of Analogue Phones, The Death Of Your Existing Handset And The Migration To VoIP

The End Of Analogue Phones, The Death Of Your Existing Handset And The Migration To VoIP

BT are continuing their plan to shut down their traditional telephone network (ISDN) in the UK with the intention to move us all in the UK over to Internet-based telephony (VoIP).

This process has already started and by the end of this year (2020), there will be no new ISDN orders processed and by 2025, the old network will be finally deactivated.

This is quite a significant change for the telephone industry and moving from our old infrastructure to a fibre-based future is certainly a step in the right direction.

VoIP has actually been around for quite a few years. In the early days, the call quality was a bit suspect and slow internet connections didn’t exactly help its reputation but thankfully, we’ve made big advances since these early days and the evolution of VoIP has not only surpassed its predecessor, It’s beaten it hands down with:

  • More features
  • Better call quality
  • Increased stability
  • Greater transportability
  • Lower cost.

So. Where next?

We all know we need to move away from traditional telephones but before you rush in, there are some things to consider. There are many companies out there willing to set you up with a nice lengthy contract, confusing billing plans and hidden charges so making the right choices and choosing a reputable provider is key.

Some things for you to consider:

  • Make sure you understand what a VoIP service is and what it can offer to ensure you choose the best/most efficient option for you.
  • Do you have the infrastructure to support VoIP?  You’ll (basically) be making calls via your internet line rather than a phone line so you’ll need to consider allowances and line stability.
  • Do you have the right hardware to support VoIP calling?  If you like to have a handset on your desk you’ll need a VoIP handset.  You can also make calls from your smartphone, tablet or laptop – or a mixture of the above!
  • Is your internet security up to scratch? Review your systems, processes and make changes where needed.  Bear in mind staff awareness and training here.
  • Consider using a service provider for your VoIP system and as with anything do your research to get the best level of service and support for you and your business.

Sometimes the future can seem daunting and if you’re not a ‘techie’, switching to VoIP needn’t be scary and can actually be quick and painless with the right knowledge and support.

If you’re a SwitchboardFREE customer already, your inbound service will not be affected by the deactivation but if you require outbound calls or any help with moving to VoIP then speak to our VoIP switching team on
