Hackers Used Avast’s CCleaner To Spread Hidden Malware To 2.27 Million People

Hackers used Avast’s CCleaner to spread hidden malware to 2.27 million computers. Hacker’s inject malicious code in CCleaner version 5.33.6162 and which is downloaded by 2.27 millions users. Hacker’s widely used computer utility software CCleaner in August and also tried to infect the machines at Microsoft, Intel and other top technology companies, according to the research done by the Cisco Systems released on yesterday.

The Ccleaner is most widely used computer utility tool to clean up the computer to reduce traces, junk files and many more to optimize the computer. It has been downloaded more two billion of times. The researchers at Cisco Talos  found that the download servers used by Avast (The Company Owns CCleaner) were compromised to distribute malware inside computer utility tool CCleaner. “For over a period of time, The CCleaner 5.33 version is being distributed by Avast also that is contained a multi-stage malware payload that rode on top of the installation of CCleaner,” says the Talos team.

According to Avast, CCleaner has been downloaded more than 2 billions times, making it a popular target for hackers.The company spotted a security breach in CCleaner 5.33.6162 and CCleaner cloud. A Piriform’s VP of Products Paul Yung has said. It also mention in the statement by the Avast spokeperson tha a suspicious activity was identified on september 12th,2017, where we saw an unknown IP address receiving data from software found in version 5.33.6162, and the cloud version 1.07.3191, on 32-bit Windows OS.

Avast Piriform believes that it was able to prevent the breach harming customers. “Piriform now believes that these users are now safe as its investigation signifies that it will be able to disarm the threat before it was able to cause any harm to your computer,” says an Avast spokesperson.

This malicious tool can collect information from victim’s computer such as OS version, Processes, mac address and lots more. The company claimed that they made changes to the tool before it made to public. However, how the code ended up in the binary was still in mystery.
