Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 vs the Samsung Note 20: Which One Should You Get and Why

Samsung is here to save 2020 by releasing two new, revolutionary smartphones: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20. If you were intrigued by the original Fold model but were hesitant to get one, let us reassure you that the updates and improvements on this second generation are worth the hype. If you love the Samsung Galaxy models and aren’t interested in the novelty of the Fold, that’s fine too! The Note 20 and the Note 20 Ultra have almost all of the same features as the Fold 2 and even some superior ones.

If you’re torn between these two awesome pieces of tech, we don’t blame you, but we hope that breaking down the specs of each device based on what matters most to you will help make your decision easier.

If screen size matters to you: Screen size is the main difference between the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Note 20. The Note 20 has a standard 6.7” screen (6.9” for the Ultra) that reaches the absolute edge of the device for a beautiful and seamless-looking device. When closed, the front screen of the Fold 2 has a 6.2” screen but unfolded the screen expands to a whopping 7.7” screen with full visibility in the crease.

For the selfie and photography experts: Both devices come with triple rear cameras. On the Fold 2 and the Note 20, the three cameras are identical: the first being a standard 12 MP camera, the second being a 12 MP wide-angle camera, and the third a 64 MP telephoto camera. The Note 20 Ultra has a more powerful wide-angle camera and zoom capabilities as well as the added bonus of a laser autofocus sensor, making it perfect for taking photos in low light. The front camera on all three devices is a 10 MP camera. And yes, the Fold 2 takes selfies both open and closed.

For the professional and amateur videographers: When it comes to video recording capabilities, the two Note 20 models are more customizable than the Fold 2. They both can shoot up to 8K at 24 fps with slow motion and super slow-mo functionality. The Note 20 Ultra has a 20x digital zoom to the Note 20’s 12x zoom. The Fold 2 can only shoot up to 4K and does not have as many customizable options but is still a good camera option for those who never mess with the settings anyways.

If your battery is constantly below 10%: Battery life is an often overlooked, but very important feature to consider on a new device. The Note 20 has a 4300mAh capacity battery (about 11 hours of constant battery life) while the Note 20 Ultra and the Fold 2 both have a whopping 4500mAh capacity battery which should last well over 12 hours and can charge to above 50% in 30 minutes. All three have fast-charging and wireless charging capabilities.

If you love using the S Pen: If using the Samsung S Pen is something you’ve grown accustomed to, you’re definitely going to want to stick to the Note 20 over the Fold 2, as the Fold does not come with an S Pen. They have switched the placement of the S Pen to the left side of the device but other than that it is the same S Pen you know and love.

If money is, in fact, an object: More information will be released soon about the price of the Fold 2, which hasn’t been confirmed yet, but experts estimate that it will cost around $1700-$1900. The Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra start at $1299.99. If you’ve always had the same device year after year and you’d love to try something new and exciting, then splurge on the Fold 2, but if you prefer a wider range of features and love your old Note, you’ll love the Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra just as much.

The bottom line is that these are both incredibly capable devices. The main differences are, obviously, that the Fold 2 is basically a phone and tiny tablet in one and the Note 20 models are just an elevated standard. If you’re weighing your options, think about the two or three features that are most important to you and compare them.
