Everything You Want to Know About Wireless Charging

Android users have enjoyed Wireless Charging capability for several years now, but Apple lovers have only just been able to jump on the Qi charging bandwagon this past year. The ability to charge wirelessly now comes standard on the new generation of iPhone: the iPhone 8, 8+ and the iPhone X.

Wireless charging is a simple, yet fascinating process and if you’re new to the game or you haven’t given it much thought before, you may not know that this concept was invented decades ago, way before smartphones and even before the first telephone.

It Starts with the Laws of Electromagnetism

Electromagnetic induction was conceptualized by Michael Faraday in 1831. Faraday created a basic law of electromagnetism (aptly named Faraday’s Law) that states that when you take a loop of wire and put it into a changing magnetic field, a current is induced in that wire.

Wireless charging stands contain one coil that has a constant alternating electric current surging through it. This current creates an electromagnetic field that surrounds the stand.

Smartphones that are Qi compatible also have a coil inside that, when put into close proximity to the electromagnetic field created by the stand, reroutes the alternating current from the charging stand into a direct current so that it can power the phone.

But That Doesn’t Mean it’s Faster

Wireless charging will not necessarily charge your phone faster than wired charging. That totally depends on which phone you have and your chosen chargers’ capabilities. It is generally known that wireless chargers are slower than wired but choosing one with an appropriate wattage and placing your device in a certain place on the pad can speed it up.

So is it Worth it?

Yes. Wireless chargers are convenient and affordable. They also prevent some of the wear and tear that phone jacks go through after years of plugging and unplugging. With the ability to charge multiple devices (and even devices from different brands) on the same pad, at the same time, it’s no wonder that everyone is running out to get one.

So if you’re tired of always fumbling for your cord at night, a wireless charger could be your new favorite accessory.
