Toyota will release this year the next-gen Supra and everyone is wondering whether the car is aimed for TRD. Some say that the new Supra has been developed as a supercar for the Acura NSX and Nissan GT-R, while others are convinced it will be an affordable sports car.
What is known so far about Supra
Rumors have it that the Toyota Supra vehicle will feature an inline-6 engine. Other are speculating the car will use a BMW-sourced turbo-4mil. If the latter were to be true, the Supra car will be able to achieve 400hp and its retail price will be of aprox. $50,000- $60,000.
A recent leak shows the Supra operates on a hybrid setup, the Supra TRD, offering 600hp and a retail price of around $100,000. Audi has already proved it is possible to build such as car by creating R8 V8 and R8 V10 models.
The new Supra (J29) to receive help from BMW
It is known that Toyota is receiving help from BMW to release the Supra (J29) model. Some leaks suggest that Supra will also get a full range of BMW engines and transmissions. Toyota will receive these bonuses and in exchange BMW will get affordable platforms upon which to build BMW Z4.
The 2018 Toyota Supra is said to receive either a 248 horsepower turbo four or a 335 horsepower turbo six. The same leak suggests the car will be limited to the ZF-8HP eight-speed automatic and no manual trans options.
Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division’s president, Shigeki Tomoyama, has declared in an interview with Motor1 UK that the future car might be badged as Gazoo instead of Toyota. He also added that the Supreme will be a pure sports car with 50:50 weight distribution.
