After working for the Facebook Company until 2011, Chamath Palihapitiya regrets his previous position for the harm he did to our society. At an event for Stanford Business School in November, he admitted how it only destroys how society works turning it into a global problem where the main reason of how people interact is destroyed. Everything got posted on Monday on the Verge’s website.
The reason behind
Everything started after the founding president on Facebook, Sean Parker, attacked the way that the company “exploits a vulnerability in human psychology” by creating a “social-validation feedback loop.” Palihapitiya affirmed he is going to control his and his children decision for not using the platform but that he can’t do the same for the rest because he can’t control it. And with the money he gained from the previous job he will use to do some good in the world. The former executive gives reasons to think about the fact we are being programmed and we don’t even figure it out, giving us a choice of how much are we “going to give up on intellectual independence.”
Social media to links growing political divisions
It is rumored that the sudden outcomes of the 2016 US presidential election and Brexit referendum was created by Facebook’s news feeds, along with fake news or simple talk and propaganda. Facebook recently admitted selling advertisements to Russian operatives just to grow a link among US voters in the last year’s election. It also got criticized for intensifying anti-Rohingya propaganda in Myanmar during the alleged ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority. Then, Palihapitiya even brought to light how WhatsApp, app also owned by Facebook, falsely informed people from India of a fake message about a group of kidnappers leading to the beating to death of seven people. This is the state of mass manipulation that we leave in. There are no comments from Facebook yet.
