WhatsApp just got some very bad news and it will surprise you

Can you believe that it’s only five years since Google launched its digital marketplace, the Google Play Store?

It feels like the smartphone store has been around forever, but this week marks five years since the hugely-successful first flung open its digital doors.

The celebrate the big anniversary, Google has released a roundup of the best-selling apps, games, movies, music and books since the platform’s founding.

While, unsurprisingly Facebook tops the apps download charts, there’s a notable omission, with WhatsApp failing to make the top honours list.

Despite being the world’s most popular messenger service with more than 1.2 billion active monthly users, WhatsApp didn’t make Google’s top five download list.

Instead, Facebook took the top two spots, with the standard Facebook app followed up by Facebook Messenger.

With Pandora Radio rounding out the podium positions, the Facebook owned Instagram ended the half decade in fourth, with current social hit, Snapchat, in fifth.

There is a caveat to this figures, however, with the download list only relating to apps downloaded from the US version of the Google Play Store.

WhatsApp is more successful with markets outside the US, with the app currently taking top spot in the UK ahead of Facebook Messenger.

Things were a little more predictable on the games front, with Candy Crush Saga heading the bunch.

This was followed by Subway Surfers in second, and Temple Run 2 in third.

Despicable Me and Clash of Clans rounded out the list of the most popular Android games of the past five years.

The news comes as latest reports suggest WhatsApp is about to ruin its service by allowing businesses to directly message users.

Although the company is believed to be looking at ways to prevent spamming, this is sure to annoy a lot of users.

It comes as Facebook looks to finally monetise the platform it paid a staggering $19 billion for a couple of years ago
