Electric Bike Wizards: Exclusive Interview with Pedego’s CEO, Don DiConstanzo

If you’re involved or interested in the world of electric bikes, then you’ve doubtlessly heard of Pedego. Since the company first opened shop back in 2009, they’ve quickly earned a reputation as one of the premier e-bike companies in the world. You’d be hard up finding a top ten best e-bikes list without stumbling across one of Pedego’s many products.

While Pedego is best known for their California-style cruiser e-bikes, they also make many other styles, including: commuters, folding bikes, cargo bikes, and even an electric tandem bike!

Their customer-first approach and dedication to quality has served the business well. Since 2009 they’ve expanded to more than 40 countries around the world!

To learn a little more about what makes Pedego tick, we corresponded with Don DiCostanzo – CEO of Pedego electric bikes – who was kind enough to share with us his story and insights.

LEV Revolution: For those in our audience who may not be familiar with Pedego, can you give us a brief rundown of the company’s history?

DiCostanzo (Pedego CEO): Pedego Electric Bikes was founded in 2008 by Terry Sherry and myself, who were best friends in college and best men in each other’s weddings.

We loved to cycle but hated hills, so we designed the first Pedego bike, the Comfort Cruiser, on a cocktail napkin in 2008. It shipped in 2009. Today, Pedego offers 10 styles, including cruisers, tandems, commuters, fat-tire bikes, mountain bikes, cargo bikes and a convenient electric folding bike. Pedego is the #1 electric bike brand in the U.S. according to Navigant Research.

Pedego Timeline

LEV Revolution: Pedego has earned a reputation as one of the premier manufacturers of electric bikes in the world. What is it about Pedego’s products that set them apart from your competitors?

DiCostanzo (Pedego CEO): Pedego is the #1 electric bike brand in the U.S. because we believe the rider is the most important part of the bike. And it shows in the quality and comfort of the bikes. With a choice of 10 high-quality, innovative models, Pedego bikes are designed to delight the customers with their good looks and quality components. Pedego also backs up its bikes with one of the industry’s longest warranties of two years for both the bike and battery.

LEV Revolution: As you mentioned, Pedego offers e-bikes in many different styles. What style is the most popular among your customers?

DiCostanzo (Pedego CEO): The Interceptor is Pedego’s most popular bike. A 50’s-inspired cruiser, it has a twist-and-go throttle, Pedal Assist, and a computer with an odometer, speedometer and trip odometer. It’s available in classic and step-thru models and comes in a variety of fun colors, a choice of four different tires/wheel colors, including mag wheels, and two battery sizes. It is priced at $2995.

LEV Revolution: It’s interesting that you offer a tandem bike. I’ve never seen an electric tandem bike before. Is Pedego the only company to offer an electric tandem bike? What inspired this e-bike?

DiCostanzo (Pedego CEO): A tandem is the most romantic way for couples to ride together. When it’s electric, it’s easy and fun to ride. It’s also one of the most popular Pedego bikes for rentals and tours. The Pedego Tandem was inspired by Terry’s and my desire to be able to ride with our wives. Both of us have been married more than 30 years.

LEV Revolution: Can you tell us about the latest addition to Pedego’s catalog, the Platinum Interceptor?

DiCostanzo (Pedego CEO): Pedego’s Platinum Interceptor is a higher-end version of its popular Interceptor electric bike. It comes in a lustrous silver finish and is available in classic and step-thru styles. It has a 10-speed drive train, front suspension and a rugged 500-watt motor that zooms riders up hills and through headwinds with ease. It features Pedego’s proprietary PedalSense technology that delivers cadence and torque sensor programming for an ultra-responsive ride. Priced at $3795, it is available now at Pedego stores. LEV Revolution: What can we expect next from Pedego?

DiCostanzo (Pedego CEO): Pedego will be introducing its first trike in April. In April, Pedego will also introduce 24-inch and 20-inch Trail Tracker fat-tire trail bikes that are perfect for kids and other riders under 5’4”.
