Space is one of the most notorious clubbing venues on the Spanish island of Ibiza. In 2005, 2006, 2012 and 2013, it was named the ‘Best Global Club’ at the International Dance Music Awards, and its Funktion-One sound system was widely liked amongst Club-goers. The club’s owner, Pepe Rosello, finally decided to call it a day in 2016, however – with the once infamous club closing its doors for good. Turn the clock forward to 2017 and there’s a new club that has taken its place. It’s got a new owner, new name, and most importantly, a new sound system.

Hï Ibiza is hoping to fill the gap in the market that Space left wide open, although it won’t be a carbon copy of the club that previously occupied the space. In fact, the club’s new owner has said that he wants to usher the world of dance music into the future – complete with a whole new clubbing experience.

Given the popularity of the Funktion-One system, the new owners of Hï Ibiza had to select the new sound system carefully. Eventually they settled on an Adamson system, which supposedly offers a ’rounder’ sound than the prior installation. It’s not completely surprising that the owners would choose Adamson, after all their other venue, the Ushuaia Club, also utilises an Adamson system. The difference between the two venues are distinct, however. Ushuaia Club is completely outdoors, while Hï Ibiza is an indoor venue.

Little is known about the sound system other than the brand behind it, but it’s supposedly multi-directional and has been custom-made for the club. In fact, the whole design of the club has been shaped around the new sound system – with the ceilings having been specifically lowered to immerse clubgoers in the music.

In addition to the sound system changes, the new owners want to invest heavily in the production of DJ sets – nowhere will this be more evident than on its opening night, May 28. To celebrate the opening, the club has settled on the theme of solid light, orbs and mirror discs. The organisers say it will only be done once, and will never be repeated – allowing clubgoers to experience something new every time they visit.

Due to the complexity of the theme, set designer Willie Williams, who has collaborated with notable acts such as U2, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie, has been called in to create a unique lighting element. The element involes twisting LED-screened ribbons which will stretch across the entire length of the room.

While the opening night will be complex, Hï Ibiza will be crafting a different production in the theatre every night, with 70 people working from 8am until the afternoon to pull down all the lighting and stage arrangements of the club and rebuild for a special setup the following day.

It’s clear that Hï Ibiza is investing heavily to ensure that the new club lives up to the club that it replaced, although it won’t just be technology that will be the shining star. Much of the draw for the club will be the acts, of which Hï Ibiza has seven resident DJs. Those DJs include the likes of Martin Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Thomas Jack, and Glitterbox, as well as Kölsch, Joris Voorn, Luciano, Nic Fanciulli, Steve Lawler, Andrea Oliva, Black Coffee and Eric Prydz.
