Royal Caribbean is known for having some of the most technologically advanced cruise ships in the world, but the company’s subsidiary, Celebrity Cruises, could have just created the world’s most high-tech Cruise Ship.
Dubbed the Celebrity Edge, this cruise ship utilises technology that no other cruise operator has used before. It all starts from the moment guests go to check-in for their cruise, utilising facial recognition and geo-fenced beacons to ensure that passengers don’t spend too long waiting in the queue.
Once on-board the ship, there’s a wealth of technology that rivals even the smartest of homes. Celebrity Cruises has designed the ship to be as frictionless as possible, which is why passengers won’t need a key card whilst on board. Instead, the Celebrity Edge uses NFC technology to allow keyless entry into its accommodation using a smartphone app.
It’s not just in the public areas where the technology shines either. Inside the staterooms guests will find a dedicated touchscreen for controlling everything from lighting and window shades, to room temperature and more. Those who upgrade to one of the special Infinite Balcony staterooms will also find an option for converting the entire living space into a balcony at the touch of a button. This involves folding the entirety of the doors away letting passengers walk right out to the water’s edge, without physically having to step outside.
For those with a little more to spend, the ship’s new Iconic Suites are bound to impress, as will the two-storey Edge Villas. The 950sq-ft Iconic Suite is situated on the very top of the ship and comes complete with two dedicated bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s a full shower and whirlpool tub, while an in-suite butler pantry is also available.
For those who don’t have their own personal butler, like in the suites, the Celebrity Edge offers a Virtual Concierge app for ordering drinks and booking dinner reservations. The app also offers a map that will change dependent on your location on the cruise ship, making it easier to navigate.
While the Celebrity Edge doesn’t boast a robotic bar, like the Royal Caribbean Quantum-class ships, it does offer a unique venue dubbed the ‘Magic Carpet’. This venue is the it is the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform, and is suspended 13 storeys above sea level. Passengers will find this the place to be for live music performances and socialising while on-board.
The Celebrity Edge sets sail in 2018, and until another cruise operator releases another tech-filled cruise ship, it’s likely going to retain its title as the most high-tech cruise ship ever.
