Pipsqueak: Bluetooth phone for kids, controlled by parents

If you are a parent with a young child, you know what it’s like to hand over your Phone to your child to keep them occupied while you take care of adult things like grocery shopping, talking to other parents, or whatever the situation may be. As great as it is to have a device that keeps your kiddo entertained, you are running some risks. Some of these risks include the possibility of missing that important email from your boss or the (sometimes high) probability of your child dropping your $600+ gadget on the ground or in a puddle of water. Thanks to a group of creative parents, you now have another option: The Pipsqueak by Yip Yap, phone for kids.

Introducing Pipsqueak: Phone for kids!

Yip Yap recently announced the Pipsqueak, a Bluetooth accessory for young children that lets kids have their own “phone” — even though it isn’t really a phone. Since 2012, Yip Yap has been working on the technology to create an extension of a parent’s phone for their child. The Pipsqueak is a kid-friendly device shaped like a flip phone that is durable, colorful, and customizable with interchangeable covers. The device uses Bluetooth to pair with any regular cell phone and can then be used to make and receive phone calls through the real cell phone’s signal. The Pipsqueak is being pitched as a safer way to let kids make phone calls without putting the parents’ expensive devices at risk, as well as, to reduce the amount of radiation to which the kids are exposed. It’s also a way for kids to be interactive with an age-appropriate device by allowing the parent to control it completely from Yip Yap’s app.

What All Can a Kid Do with Pipsqueak?

Everything. According to the company’s Fundable page, this little device packs a big punch! With Pipsqueak, your child can stream YouTube videos or you can use the device’s 4GB memory (expandable to 16GB) to load dozens of their favorite movies and videos for use on long car trips without wifi. Your child can also make phone calls from Pipsqueak via bluetooth. You can also set an approved list of contacts for your child through the app on your device. In addition to the phone call functionality, Pipsqueak is a media player, has a voice recorder, and can be used as a soundboard for learning exercises.

Since we all know how carried away kids can get with noise, it should be noted that the device also includes earphones. Pipsqueak also includes games, a photo gallery so you can share your child’s photos with them over the bluetooth connection, and tons of customizable options both inside and out to help he device grow with your child.

Is Pipsqueak Right For My Child?

If you want a device that can entertain and teach your child while you still have every control at your fingertips, something like Pipsqueak is great for you. Yip Yap has worked hard to bring parents peace of mind and bring children the entertainment they enjoy. The cost will set you back about $100, which is still in-line with many interactive toys on the market today. Yip Yap may be onto something here, and you and your child may be able to benefit from it.
