Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, to start a tunnel digging company to battle traffic

Already credited with being the brains behind SpaceX, Tesla, Paypal and Hyperloop, Elon Musk is a technological giant in his own right. Now he says that he is about to start in yet another venture, that is going to change the face of transport. He now will be venturing into a business that will dig a tunnel under traffic.

Elon insisted that he wanted to ease Traffic after getting frustrated in traffic. Elon Musk has hinted at starting a company that will dig tunnels under existing roads to ease the flow of traffic. While some thought it was a joke or an ‘in the heat of the moment’ comment, by a man frustrated by traffic, Elon went ahead to affirm his commitment towards the venture in a tweet, ‘I’m actually going to do this!’

Digging a tunnel under traffic shouldn’t come as a surprise as most of his companies have come as a result of similar problems. He invented Paypal after he was unable to send money confidently via the net. SpaceX was crafted as he wanted to tour Mars.

Elon Musk the 83rd wealthiest man on the planet, 21st in Forbes Magazine’s most influential people and was had a net worth of $11.5 Billion as of mid-2016. He is an accomplished business mogul, inventor and engineer, among countless other accomplishments.

The name of the company according to Elon Musk will be aptly named Boring Company. If his plans come to pass, Musk will be a pioneer in this new venture once again. In the U.S, there are only a few traffic underground tunnels, some that were built as far back as the 1930s. But there exists a well-organized network of underground railway tunnels.

What an underground road tunnel would mean?

Traffic jams are a classic case of demand outstripping supply. The roads simply cannot cater for the high number of vehicles. It is a global problem and has very many adverse social and economic effects. The only people who seem to profit from traffic are the oil companies as traffic congestion results in the consumption of lots of fuel. With the tunnels, Elon hopes to ease the traffic without changing the infrastructure too much.

In the past, it has been suggested that to ease traffic jams, the roads should be privatized, and drivers should be charged to use the roads. This would result in double or even triple taxation. Road usage is already added as a tax in many consumable products related to vehicles, such as gas and oil.

How a tunnel under traffic would work

Tunnels would double the capacity of roads to handle traffic. This would substantially reduce the flow of traffic and also the millions of person-hours that are spent in traffic. This, in turn, would push down the prices of fuel, increase economic growth as there would be more time for people to work, and also combat the emotional stress that affects drivers who find themselves stuck in traffic for extended periods of time, namely road rage. In theoretically, these added advantages seem farfetched, but then again all Elon’s ideas seemed just that, farfetched.

There have been many suggestions, studies, and proposals that have come up over the years. Some have been implemented; others have been shelved while others have been deemed impractical and discarded.

But one thing has stood; no practical solution has been found thus far to curb the incessant traffic snarl-ups effectively.
