Live + Work Units at The Cargo District Available Spring 2018

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Cargo District™, an urban market and coworking village, today announced ground break at 1602 Queen Street to begin constructing nine new residences from locally-sourced shipping containers. Owned and developed by L.S. Smith Inc. and designed by Rob Romero of Romero Architecture, the nine container apartments due for completion this spring mark the first phase of development expected for The Cargo District.

“This initial phase of development is just the beginning for The Cargo District. We’re also planning more apartments, a coffee shop, commissary kitchen, and food truck park,” states Leslie Smith, owner of L.S. Smith Inc. and developer of The Cargo District.

An urban mix-use project, The Cargo District conceptual plans include the use of upcycled intermodal shipping containers to create a mix of retail, office, and residential spaces. The one-bedroom Live + Work units are the first set of apartments, constructed utilizing two 20 foot containers integrated with traditional building materials and providing approximately 600 square feet of living space.

On the lower level, each Live + Work unit will feature a full-size kitchen with a reverse osmosis filtration system, large living room, paved patio, small garden, and off-street parking for a single vehicle. On the second level, the units will include a bedroom, bathroom, walk-in closet, stackable washer and dryer, and private balcony.

Following the development of these nine Live Work Units, Smith is also planning 50 to 70 additional one to two bedroom apartments constructed from over 200 containers. “We’ve had tremendous response from the public on this first phase of apartments. With only nine apartments available, we recommend that interested residents reach out as soon as possible to reserve. We will be accepting deposits as early as January 2018,” states Smith.
