TJ Watt Picks Number 90
If you are planning on buying a TJ Watt jersey he has officially picked his Number (Steelers.com is taking pre-orders for Watt jerseys). Watt chose the number 90, which doesn’t have the best history in Pittsburgh.

History of #90 in Pittsburgh
Here is a list of Steelers players to wear number 90 by year:
Steve McLendon (11-12), Thaddeus Gibson (10), Travis Kirschke (04-09), Erik Flowers (03), Justin Kurpeikis (01-02), Donnel Thompson (00), Reggie Lowe (99), Bill Johnson (95-96), Jeff Zgonina (93-94), Huey Richardson (91-92), Tyronne Stowe (87-90), Steve Apke (87), Bob Kohrs (81-85), George Webster (72- 73), Dick Lasse (58), Leon Jamison (58), John Howle (56)
Travis Kirschke is the best player to have worn the number. That doesn’t give the number 90 much historical value in Pittsburgh, but Watt will look to change that.
Last First-Round Pick to Wear 90
This number was also assigned to former-first-round pick Huey Richardson. Richardson may be the biggest bust in Steelers Draft history. During the 1991 draft the Steelers were focused on taking Tennessee wide receiver Alvin Harper, Colorado wide receiver Mike Pritchard or Arizona State running back Leonard Russell.
Those three players were then drafted with picks 12-14 and the Steelers rushed to make a pick before the 15-minute clock ran out. They settles on Richardson, who only played one season in Pittsburgh and three seasons in his NFL career.
A New Era for #90
The number 90 does not have much history in Pittsburgh, but TJ Watt can turn that around. This is also an old-school choice for the linebacker number. Many linebackers these days prefer numbers in the 40’s and 50’s, but 90 is a perfect number choice for Watt.
Hopefully he can bring some glory to the number.
