How Did The Premier League Clubs Fare In The Champions League

Manchester City were humiliated last time they came up against the Catalan giants, spearheaded by MSN, this time they welcomed them back to Etihad. Meanwhile, Arsenal needed three points to secure qualification, Spurs were hoping to find some form in Europe, and conversely Leicester City were trying to maintain their blistering start to life in Europe.

Manchester City 3-1 Barcelona

City were simply sublime on Tuesday night. To bounce back from a 4-0 drubbing that epitomised their recent form, to beat the best team in the world and make it look easy is nothing short of sensational. Ilkay Gundagon ran rings around Sergio Busquets, and the infamous attacking trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar were uncharacteristically subdued, that’s credit to City’s pressing. Perhaps in the first half hour City were stunned by the occasion, as Barca controlled the game, but from then on the Sky Blues pushed on, and never looked back. The character shown by Pep Guardiola’s side to come back from 1-0 down is impressive and will give his side a renewed momentum in their title push. Could this force Gundagon into your FPL plans? Especially given his generous price tag.

Ludogorets 2-3 Arsenal

47. The number of times I have watched Mesut Ozil’s composed, clinical and simply astonishing winner. Being 2-0 down against the Bulgarian minnows after twenty minutes is not an ideal situation. Yes, Arsenal had more or less secured qualification, but they still needed this win, if anything in terms of keeping up their momentum for their title push. Olivier Giroud will be pleased to have grabbed another goal, whilst Granit Xhaka’s mixed start to his Arsenal career will be boosted by another goal on Tuesday. Giroud and Ozil could be ones to watch ahead of GW 11 for the budding FPL managers amongst you, judging by their impressive displays.

FC Kobenhavn 0-0 Leicester City

29 shots – 3 on target. Sums up a drab game. Leicester will be pleased with the point, they are now a point away from qualification. Kasper Schmeichel made an athletic late stop to save the Premier League champions a point, but Robert Huth was immense at the heart of the defence and it will give Leicester confidence they can carry this form into the Premier League. Will you fantasy managers be tempted to draft in Leicester defensive cover?

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen

Spurs were woeful on Wednesday night. They lacked shaped, they lacked cutting edge and they lacked the spirit and work rate that has seen them be so successful in the last 15 months. As an FPL manager, I would fear to own these Tottenham assets, as even at this early stage it appears fatigue and a heavy fixture list is taking its toll on Spurs. I think they’ll struggle to qualify now in the Champions League, and Spurs desperately need Toby Alderweireld and Harry Kane back – they are big misses. So perhaps while their poor showing in Europe will be disappointing, it could ultimately aid their push for the Premier League title.
