Coach reveals why this Man Utd flop has been a top dog for the national team

With much fanfare, Alexis Sanchez moved to Manchester United from Arsenal during the January transfer window in 2018. What followed for the Chilean was an underwhelming 18 months with only 5 goals and 9 assists in 45 appearances.

But surprisingly there has been a stark contrast in his performances with the Chile National side, especially in the ongoing Copa America where he has scored twice and provided an assist in 2 games.

Chile manager Reinaldo Rueda has come on record stating that the difference in his performances is because of the connection he has with his national teammates in contrast with the poor rapport he has with his United teammates hinting that he’s doesn’t really feel at home in Old Trafford (National).

It’s not easy to explain, but Alexis has come here and shown a lot of commitment and perhaps in Manchester he does not have the emotional bond he has with his teammates here, that affection.

He’s had bad fortune because Manchester United have had problems for a while, so he does not have the structure he has here. He has also had injuries, he’s lacked consistency, he has lacked continuity.

These claims come at a crucial time especially with Sanchez’s future at United being highly uncertain at the moment.

There have been several rumors linking him with moves away from the club with United trying to recoup money for their transfer plans. Given his performances with United, it is unlikely that major European clubs would consider him.

He’s been linked with moves to China and some other unconventional locations. As per the latest rumors, Brazil’s Palmeiras were also negotiating a loan move with United which has apparently broken down recently (Sport Witness).

The pivotal factor for him at United is his wage bill.

Sanchez is on a contract where he earns nearly £500,000-a-week. With United reportedly looking to rebuild their squad under Solskjær, his wages are turning into a huge liability.

The Alexis Sanchez debacle has resulted in many to introspect the way the structure of United management has been working especially after the Fergie era.

Former manager Jose Mourinho stated that the players command a greater power than they should.

United are arguably still commercially the biggest club in the world but the way they’ve used their finances towards their footballing purposes hasn’t been productive.

Not just Sanchez but most of their marquee signings haven’t exactly been successful. From Di Maria to Depay to Lukaku, all have underperformed at United.

At the age of 30, Sanchez at United has only been a shadow of what he was at Arsenal where he was their talisman. He would be hoping to continue his positive run with Chile to overturn his fortunes.
