Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Manchester United has lifted the mood of many fans across and he’s pulled no punches in bringing European superstars such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan with him.

Now he has broken the world transfer record to acquire one of Europe’s most coveted talents, Paul Pogba. United, who came up short of Champions League football last season, have showcased their standing as one of world football’s biggest clubs by landing arguably the best central midfielder in world football. Here’s what they are getting out of the world-record deal.

What will Pogba bring to Manchester United?

Despite having a potential strikeforce of Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney, there’s a gaping hole in central midfield that hasn’t been filled since the departure of Paul Scholes. Pogba has been praised for his versatility and determination, his ball-winning abilities as well as his on the ball work being nothing short of spectacular.

He’s won four consecutive Serie A titles and amassed over 200 appearances for the Old Lady blossoming from a diamond in the rough to a bona fide global superstar. He is perfectly suited for a box-to-box midfield role and is as complete as modern midfielders come.

“I remember Paul Scholes kicking the living daylights out of him in every single training session, every day. But he earned our respect by never moaning, never shouting and never making a fuss. He always wanted the ball still and that kind of attitude has helped him progress,” United legend Rio Ferdinand said of Pogba.

Pogba contributed eight goals and 12 assists in 33 Serie A appearances last season, according to Squawka. The midfield dynamo completed 83% of his passes, bettering Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Last campaign he created 54 chances, more than Ander Herrera, Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin and Carrick combined while also winning more tackles (55) than any of his new team mates.

Pogba also won 64.95% of his aerial duels and completed 42 key passes, again bettering all of Manchester United’s current central midfielders. At only 23 years of age, there is still plenty of room for improvement.

What does Pogba’s arrival mean for Schweinsteiger and Fellaini?

Even before Pogba’s arrival it was obvious that Bastian Schweinsteiger’s days at Old Trafford are numbered but now the Frenchman is here there will be no way back for the former Bayern Munich man.

As for Marouane Fellaini, he has his uses and is versatile and willing to fight for a place at United. But whether he maintains that attitude over the long-term if regular game time is not forthcoming remains to be seen.

How would Manchester United line-up with him in the team?

Mourinho chose a 4-2-3-1 formation in his first friendly as Manchester United manager, which will allow the plethora of attacking options to all get game time.

A midfield pairing of Pogba with French compatriot Schneiderlin is likely and perfectly balanced, just in front of them of them would be Mkhitaryan and Marital either side of Rooney supporting lone man Ibrahimovic in his most effective role. Players such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Ander Herrera wait in reserve.

Will he make the grade at Manchester United this time around?

Pogba has been touted as being one of European football’s most talented central midfielders who has the potential to one day become the absolute best in world football. The Frenchman has shown why Sir Alex Ferguson made a big mistake in allowing him to leave by tearing Serie A apart and his homecoming could be the completion of Pogba’s determination to prove himself to doubters and handle unfinished business.

However the reported world record fee could take a toll on him as much will be expected immediately and he has no time to waste with the spotlight set to shine his way bringing in sheer amounts of pressure. He must adapt his game to the physicality of the Premier League and could struggle to get to grips in a more defensively minded role whereby his time with the ball is limited.

Pogba yearns to be the centre of attention and now is the time for him to step up, this could be seen as one of the best transfers Manchester United have ever made if it gets them back to the pinnacle of English football, it’s only a matter of time before we know for sure.
