Uruguay Bow Out, Mexico Secure a Spot in the Knockout Round on Day 7 of Copa América

Day seven of the Copa America Centenario open with a stunning upset. Venezuela, the No. 77 ranked team in the world toppled No. 9 Uruguay to win their second match of the group stage. The massive underdogs won 1-0 and knocked the Uruguayans out of the competition after just two matches.

Salomon Rondon got the only goal of the match off of a very interesting scenario. A strike from way out caught Muslera off his line and hit the crossbar. Rondon followed up and poked it into the net.

As the match was winding down, the fans started chanting for the injured Luis Suarez to get subbed on. Suarez himself even began warming up to come in. Unbeknownst to him, was the fact that the team had ruled him out before the match started. When he found out he couldn’t go in, he was a more than a little upset.

In the final minutes of the match, Uruguay’s other star striker, Edinson Cavani, had a golden chance to steal a point but blew up in dramatic fashion. A truly bitter end to Uruguay’s chances of making the quarterfinals.

To end the night, Mexico extended their remarkable unbeaten run to 21 matches with a 2-0 victory over Jamaica. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez scored in the first half to put El Tri up. It was his 45th international goal, pulling him one goal shy of Mexico’s all-time scoring record held by Jared Borgetti.

Jamaica would fight hard to save their tournament lives, but it was not to be. A late Oribe Peralta goal gave Mexico an insurmountable lead. The three points clinch a spot in the quarterfinals for themselves and Venezuela. Uruguay and Jamaica will go home after the play each other in the final group match day.
