Jim Fassel blames Super Bowl loss on Cam Newton’s gold cleats

Former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel believes that the gold MVP cleats that Panthers quarterback Cam Newton wore during pregame warmups was the reason for their demise in last Sunday’s Super Bowl loss to the Broncos.

“All of the numbers pointed to Carolina. And when I saw Cam Newton walk out in gold shoes — ‘MVP’ — I switched my mind, essentially, right then,” Fassel said on Mile High Sports 1340. “I said, ‘That’s not what a starting quarterback, MVP, leading his team — and I had a lot of respect for him during the season — that’s not what happens.’ You don’t do that. And I said, ‘This guy’s already become soft,’ and that’s what he was.”

Sounds like Fassel is reaching a bit.

Newton didn’t seem to change from week one to the Super Bowl.  But I do think he was overwhelmed and couldn’t handle the pressure.  A lot of his throws early in the game were off and sailed on him.

Hopefully Newton will learn from the loss and be able to get back to the big game at some point and win the Panthers their first Lombardi trophy.
