Bundesliga Recap: Leipzig Regain Top Spot; Schalke Held

RB Leipzig returned to the top of the Bundesliga for at least a night and set up a midweek battle with Bayern Munich for top spot heading into 2017 thanks to a 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin.

Timo Werner and Willi Orban ensured Leipzig bounced straight back from their first defeat of the season and put nine points between themselves and their guests in fourth.

Victory takes Ralph Hasenhuttl's men three Points Clear of Bayern, who travel to Darmstadt on Sunday, and ensures the winner of the top-of-the-table clash at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday will end 2016 on top of the pile.
Yevhen Konoplyanka's first Bundesliga goal earned Schalke a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Freiburg on Saturday.

Florian Niederlechner put the visitors in front before Konoplyanka levelled and saved the Royal Blues from what would have been a third straight league defeat.

Danny Latza struck a hat trick as Mainz came from behind to beat Hamburg 3-1, ending their three-game losing streak and Hamburg's two-game winning run.

U.S. international Bobby Wood put Hamburg in front with a drive from the edge of the penalty area, but Mainz levelled before half-time when Danny Latza pounced on a poor clearance by Douglas Santos and struck his shot instinctively low into the bottom left corner.

Latza, who had not scored in 33 previous Bundesliga appearances, added his and Mainz's second with an unstoppable shot from nearly 20 yards and then drilled a shot into the roof of the net from almost 30 yards.

Cologne missed an opportunity to move into the top six as they were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Werder Bremen.

Cologne took the lead in the 28th minute when Anthony Modeste's shot hit the legs of Jaroslav Drobny and the ball trickled through for Artjoms Rudnevs to convert into an open goal.

Serge Gnabry levelled with a long-range strike, although Thomas Kessler could arguably have done better as the shot bounced just in front of his outstretched arms and into the net.

Augsburg moved above Borussia Monchengladbach with their first win in five games with a 1-0 win.

The victory, which increases the pressure on Gladbach coach Andre Schubert came after Martin Hinteregger headed in a winner 15 minutes from time.

Wolfsburg moved three points clear of the Bundesliga relegation zone thanks to a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Jeffrey Bruma headed in Julian Draxler's corner to put the Wolves in front after just over half an hour.
